The project in a nutshell...

To come up with an idea for a Sci Fi/ Drama series that would ideally be aired on BBC3, and create an intro with credits for said series.


Key influences

As the idea was not my own, but Jamie’s. I did have ideas for filming, and an overall idea of what I wanted the final product to be.

The idea of having a separate credits sequence from the intro came from Misfits.

The opening pan of the Baron in his chair. We placed several

objects on the table to give some depth to the character: A pack of cigarettes, a mobile phone, a gun.

The mid shot of Tyron and Fetch. By having only one

character talk in this scene, it gives the sense who is in control of

the pair.

The shot of the Baron handing Mills the gun. This was meant to be a visually interesting shot, so we had Mills pull back the sear.

Cliche, but effective.

The close up of Mills pointing the gun at the camera.The shot was good but the cut was too

short, so it took some editing to make it longer without making it

look different.

The pan of Mills as he sits down. This was one of the more difficult shots to work with due to the space we were working in, it

was too small.

The close up of Fetch breaking his bonds. This shot was similar

to the first shot, as we learn something about the character

without the use of speech. Fetch is the muscle of the pair.

The long shot of Tyron grabbing Fetch by the shoulder. This relates

to the second shot as it reminds the viewer who the leader is.

The mid shot of the scuffle for the gun. We were originally going to have Jamie take the gun, but this was changed for continuity issues.

The final shot of Mills being shot. I was going to have the

camera jolt when the gun went off, but this proved to be too

difficult to do in editing.


Existing credits...

Our intro was meant to resemble to a fault the one from Misfits, with a separate intro and credits. In the end, we managed to make an intro, but the credits were rushed.

Time management...

Before we started filming, we had to make a timeline for the two weeks ahead. Or original plan was to begin filming in the first week, then edit in the second.

We were able to get the footage for the intro, but not for the credits. This meant the opening credits had to be made using Photoshop and final Cut.


What I enjoyed...

I enjoyed editing the footage in Final Cut, and adding the SFX and soundtrack provided by Jamie.

Working in Photoshop to create a logo and various other art, such as credits.


What was difficult...

Some parts of filming were more difficult then others. We had to do 15 retakes of one scene because all of the actors kept on laughing.

Finding some of the props.

Research into intro sequences that related to Sci-Fi and drama.

Adding the credits, as they all had to be edited in Photoshop.


Working in a team...

Our group was good, but a little disorganised at times, which did put us off schedule in the 2nd week.

The other problem was trying to keep a straight face with the camera rolling.

Guns and drugs...

Despite one of our characters being a drug baron (Hence the name) there is no use or hint of drugs in the intro.

The other issue would have to be young people with guns. We were careful not to be shown handling the gun in a humorous way.


Music and SFX

All of the sound effects that were used in the intro were from Sound Bible, which lets you download the files free of charge.

The soundtrack Jamie found was an experimental piece that had been put together in Garage Band.

The tools used...

Most of the work was done in Final Cut, with some being done in Photoshop.

The writing of essays and evaluations was done using Word, and most of the research was using the internet.


Skills developed...

I learned how to take the audio from one piece of footage and align it with another, which is useful if the audio from one clip is bugged.

I also learned how fades can be used for dramatic effect, or for covering up continuity errors.


Skills to work on...

Key framing the footage to compensate for footage. I tried to do this, and it proved to be too difficult.

Trying to work with the schedule (We spent a lot of time doing retakes. A costly, yet funny mistake.)

Looking back...

Overall, I believe that the short could be improved upon, with things such as location and actors.

We could have also had an credits sequence separate from that of the intro.


Does this fit the brief ?

The brief was “To come up with an intro for a series that could be aired on BBC3 for a target audience aged 17-21.”

All in all, I believe that if we could have improved on some of the issues, then this would have been ideal for the target audience.


Final ideas...

The intro does not feel similar to the one I had in mind, namely because all we have is an intro, not a credits sequence. I had hoped to create something similar to Misfits, where information about the characters is shown in interesting ways.
