The Masthead

The masthead is the word PREMIERE very bold across the page.

The use of colour here (the blue) really grabs the audiences attention as it stands out against the background and is a colour that is often used for movie magazines. However, the blue is still quite subtle and easy on the eyes.

The size of the font is large and takes up a large proportion at the top of the magazine.

The font itself is very bold and stylistic making it more striking for an audience to look at.

Image and Caption In previous examples I've looked at the background

helped to show a lot of the narative for the film. However, in this the background is just plain grey and it is more about the character.

The costume, the tight black web design suit reflects a dark mysterious appearance. The spider on the front links with the title of the film.

The characters facial expression is very stern and serious and the use of eye contact helps to connect with the audience.

The use of the mid-shot allows you to get a first impression of the character but doesn’t give to much away and makes you want to know more about the film.

The caption is in the traditional place for a magazine and the splash gets your attention. The strong bold text also helps and the white makes it stand out a lot more against the black background.

‘The SECRETS of’ helps to give you an insight to the film and makes you think. It also helps to link together the dark mysterious element of the picture and gives and answer to why the image is composed that way.

Language/Fonts/Colours

The magazines cover lines are done in black, blue and grey which comply with colours for the movie magazine genre. The fonts don’t change drastically but are bold and stand out well on the page. I think the cover could have been made a lot more interesting if there was a wider variety of fonts.

The cover lines mention other films and actors. This is done to grab the audiences attentions so they can read the front cover and quickly find something they will be interested in so they will ultimately buy the magazine.

The cover lines includes actors of both sex to represent both genders so that both genders of the target audience will be interested.

Some of the language is informal like the phrase ‘The allure of on-set hook-up's this makes you interested to now more as this only gives you limited information on the topic.

The Oscars are a well known award ceremony that typically people who are film want to know about. So using the words ‘Oscar Bonus’ is playing to their audiences likes and interests making them want to purchase the magazine.

This is the closest thing to a pug. It’s short and sweet and again plays to their target audiences interests. This is something their audience would want to know more about and would like to find in a movie magazine as it is ultimately there to inform you about movies, both good and bad. I like this but I think it could be more sticking on the page to grab attention.

• The banner uses the phrase ‘must-see’ this makes me the reader feel like it is something they now have to read because that’s the way the magazine has promoted it. Again I feel that the font and colour is slightly boring and doesn’t get your attention that much.
