Exhaust gas regulation (EGR)

Recirculates a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders.• EGR reduces the amount of NoxBut...• Reduces the specific heat ratio of the combustion gases and hence the power• Increase in particulate emissions

NOx Aftertreatment systems

• HC DeNOx as a non-selective NOx reduction method using HC components in suitable catalytic converters.• HC DeNOx processes have only a very narrow NOx reduction temperature window and are therefore mainly effective in urban cycles.

Diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)

• Break down pollutants from diesel engines in the exhaust stream through a chemical process.• Monolith honeycomb substrate coated with platinum group metal catalyst, packaged in a stainless steel container

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

• Porous honeycomb structure that catches the soot as it passes through.• Removes a majority of • NOx• Particulate matter (think black, cough-

inducing soot) • Unburned hydrocarbons from burned diesel

fuel

BLUETEC with NSC advanced

BLUETEC Diesel technology

• A close-coupled oxidation catalyst• An advanced NOx storage catalyst (NSC)• A particulate filter • A catalyst implemented with an SCR coating for furtherimprovement of the NOx reduction and to deal with the sulfur emission which is stored and released from the NSC due to fuel sulfur to ensure the long-term stability.

How BLUETEC with NSC Converter works

In normal lean

operation (Lambda > 1) , NO

is first oxidized to form

NO2

Then, via nitrate

formation (NO3)

stored in the

catalytic converter

on an alkaline metal oxide (e.g.

barium oxide).

Rich exhaust-

gas conditions (Lambda

< 1) is set which

contain so much

reduction agent

(CO, H2, HC) that

the nitrate bond is

suddenly dissolved

and reduced to non-toxic

nitrogen (N2)

directly on the noble-metal-coated

catalytic converter.

NH3

formed is further reduced to N2 and H2O in the

SCR catalytic

converter.

Intermittent rich fuel mixture is injected

which is controlled by the ECU depending on the NOx content in the

NSC converter

BLUETEC with Urea SCR

BLUETEC Diesel technology

• A close-coupled oxidation catalyst• A particulate filter • A catalyst implemented with an SCR coating.• An AdBlue dosing Valve

Page 12: BLUETEC DIESEL TECHNOLOGY

BLUETEC Diesel technology

How BLUETEC with Urea SCR works

NOx which passes through the DOC and

DPF enters the SCR catalytic

converter

The AdBLUE solution splits to form NH3 in the presence of exhaust

heat

The NH3 in SCR catalytic

converter reacts with the Nox from the exhaust gas

which is further

reduced to N2 and H2O

Intermittent injection of metered quantity of AdBLUE solution is controlled by the ECU

Comparison of two BLUETEC modes

The use of a NOx storage catalytic converter for NOx aftertreatment leads to a further impact to the fuel consumption

Requires low sulfur diesel (ULSD) Less then 15 ppm.

The SCR-technology costs are negatively influenced by the AdBlue tank and dosing system.

The SCR-technology requires replenishment of AdBlue at regular intervals.

The low freezing point of urea needs adequate measures for winter functioning.

NOx storage exhaust-gas aftertreatment processes, will also lead to increased HC emissions.

Disadvantages

Page 18: BLUETEC DIESEL TECHNOLOGY

BLUETEC has the cleanest diesel emissions. BLUETEC enabled Mercedes Benz E 320 to meet

EURO VI norms already. Customers would benefit from better fuel

mileage. It is predicted that the diesel sales will quadruple

in the next decade and hence an ultimate solution for NOx emissions

20 to 40% better mileage then gasoline
