Your trailer hitch is the device that attaches your trailer to

the tow vehicle. The trailer hitch is designed to fit into the

existing bolt holes in the frame of the towing vehicle.

But, if the vehicle's frame has not been drilled already, you

can do it yourself using a heavy-duty half inch chuck

handheld drill.

Follow these steps for installing your trailer hitch…

How to Install a Trailer Hitch: Intro

Prop the tow vehicle as high as safely

possible to allow yourself room to work.

Use jack stands to ensure the vehicle is

securely propped.

Safely place “wheel chocks” under each

tire, to keep the vehicle stable while you

complete the install.

Make sure you have a good light source

and safely position yourself under the

vehicle. Locate the bolt holes and any

other connections you might need to

make.

At this point, you should also tend to any

additional trimming or cutting that may

need to be done.

Step 2: Get Into Place

Your installation may require inserting a

downward pointing carriage bolt through

a hole in the frame. If so, do this now and

offer up the hitch to the frame.

In many cases, two bolts also need to be

dropped through the frame, while two

others need to be installed upward

through the hitch with nuts on top of the

frame.

STEP 3: Insert the Bolts

Pull the trailer hitch under the vehicle with

you and position it into its intended place.

Hitches can weigh up to 50 pounds, so be

careful not to drop it on yourself. For extra

safety, use a jack or other form of support.

Have someone help you by putting the

washers in place and starting to turn the nuts

for at least one bolt per side.

Once the nuts have been started, use a

wrench to tighten them to the required

torque.
