• Road accidents have earned India a dubious distinction.

• With over 130,000 deaths annually, the country has overtaken China and now has the worst road traffic accident rate worldwide.

• There is one death every four minutes due to a road accident in India.

• One serious road accident in the country occurs every minute and 16 dies on Indian roads every hour.

• 1214 road crashes occur every day in India.• Two-wheelers account for 25% of total road

crash deaths.• 16 children die on Indian roads daily.• 20 children under the age of 14 die every day

due to road crashes in the country.• 377 people die every day, equivalent to a jumbo

• The report said two wheelers accounted for the highest - about a one-third share of - the alarming 5 lakh road accidents in India in 2015 while 33% of people killed in crashes belonged to 15-24 years age bracket.

• Next to it, was the share of the groups of cars, jeeps and taxis in 2015.

• Overloaded vehicles caused 77,116 accidents and 25,199 deaths.

• While 28.4% accidents occurred on National Highways, 24% took place on State Highways and 47.6% on other roads last year(2015).

• About 17 percent each accident happened between 1500 to 1800 hours and 1800 to 2100 hours, as per the study.

• While trucks and two-wheelers were responsible for over 40 percent of deaths, peak traffic during the afternoon and evening rush hours is the most dangerous time to be on the roads.

States - Data• Two people die every hour in Uttar Pradesh –

State with a maximum number of road crash deaths.

• Tamil Nadu is the state with the maximum number of road crash injuries.

• While Tamil Nadu (69,059), Karnataka (44,011) and Maharashtra (42,250) reported the most road accidents.

• Tamil Nadu (3,668) and Maharashtra (3,146) reported the largest number of people killed in two-wheeler accidents, while Uttar Pradesh had reported the largest number of lives lost due to truck accidents (5,720) and car accidents (2,135).

• According to provisional police data provided by states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum number of road deaths (17,666), followed by Tamil Nadu (15,642), Maharashtra (13,212), Karnataka (10,856) and Rajasthan (10,510).

• More pedestrians were killed in Maharashtra (1,256) than any other state, accounting for 17 percent of pedestrian deaths.

• Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra had the most number of casualties due to over-speeding, with 15 per cent and 12 per cent of cases, respectively.

• Uttar Pradesh had the largest number of deaths due to careless/dangerous driving (17 percent), followed by Maharashtra (nine per cent).

• 5 lives end on Delhi’s roads every day.

Economy• India's road network is the second longest in the

world and its transport sector key to its economic growth.

• The government plans to continue building at the rate of 30km of highway daily. Without significant improvements in traffic infrastructure and road safety, the current average of one death per each 2km of national highway can only rise.

• India’s GDP takes a 3% hit every year due to road accidents, equivalent to over $58 billion in value terms, a United Nations (UN) study has found out.

How to reduce accidents?• In 2015-16, the ministry was able to award

10,000 km of highway contracts worth rupees 1 lakh crores, but it’s also important to supervise the tender is given to good companies which should use good quality material and trained workers to build the roads.

• Many people who are not good at driving get the license due to contacts. One must learn driving at a registered driving school and then apply for the license.

• A heavy penalty should be imposed on all those who exceed the speed limit, don’t wear a helmet, and cause an accident.

• Engineering studies must be promoted in order to produce good engineers to build safe roads.

• Equitable sharing of road space and segregation of lanes for motorized and non-motorized transport is important to bring down the number of road accidents and deaths amongst the vulnerable road users.

• Phone booths on the highways can help people sooner in case of an accident. Setting up of health centres would see to it that the injured receive first aid before being taken to hospitals.

Experts View• "We need a comprehensive legislation to deal with

this daily massacre on our roads. Stronger law and better enforcement are the key to reduce crashes," said K K Kapila of International Road Federation.

• Piyush Tewari, chief executive (and founder) of the SaveLIFE Foundation, says, "the report should be an eye-opener for our law makers, as it categorically states that Indian road safety laws do not meet the best practice requirements for four of five risk factors -- enforcing speed limits, prevention of drunk driving, safety of children and use of helmets.
