• In this presentation, we’ll cover some road trip safety tips to help keep your memories pleasant.

Get a Vehicle Inspection

• You should make sure that your vehicle gets a proper safety inspection from your mechanic. – A road trip is more demanding than your local

commute. – It’s can be challenging to find automotive help

when your vehicle breaks down in an area you are not familiar with.

Inspection Elements

• The most important inspection areas are: – Belt and hose quality – Fluid levels (especially coolant)– Tire tread – Battery– A/C

• These components take on the most stress during a road trip – so it’s important to make sure that they are in good condition.

Always Be Prepared

• If your vehicle does breakdown, a well-stocked travel kit can make the situation much more bearable. Try to include the following items when assembling your kit.

Travel Kit Essentials

• Nonperishable food, water, and medicines

• Insurance information (also, understand your coverage)

• First aid kit

• Cell phone with charger

• Road flares or cones

• Jumper cables

• Flat tire repair tools – jack – socket wrench – spare tire – flashlight

• Extra fluids – coolant – gasoline – windshield wiper fluid

• GPS and paper maps (if the GPS loses power or signal, paper maps can be a lifesaver)

Handling Vehicle Breakdown

While waiting for roadside assistance, follow these steps to keep you and your passengers safe:

• Move the vehicle off the road, away from traffic. – If you can’t move the vehicle away from traffic, have all passengers

exit the vehicle (when it is safe to do so) and stand away from traffic.

• Warn oncoming traffic by raising the hood and using the road flares or cones from your travel kit.

With the proper preparation, you can handle any disaster your travels throw at you and enjoy your road trip to fullest!
