Do You Want to Improve your Typing Speed? Follow these 5Awesome Tips

A while back I did mention that one of the skills a professional transcriptionist must striveto acquire is excellent typing speeds. This is because most transcription companies expectyou to have an accuracy score of 95 – 98% and a (TAT)Turn Around Time that is, at least, three times the audio recording. So, how do you make sure you improve your typing speedand manage to meet these requirements? I have put together five awesome tips that willhelp you get there faster..

1. Perfect Posture

It is a known fact that transcribers, more than anyone else, sit for longer hours typing. So,for you to be comfortable and focused, it is required that you position yourself well. Makesure your feet are flat on the floor with knees at 90 degrees. Have your back straight andsupported and make sure your fingers are on the home keys. With this kind of posture youwill notice an increase in your typing speeds over time.

Failing to adhere to this might lead to illnesses like Carpel Tunnel Syndrome or Tendonitis.I will be covering more on these in future posts.

2. Avoid looking at the keyboard

I know, at the beginning, this might seem almost impossible to do. But, as you gainmoment, your muscle memory will master the keys and soon typing will become secondnature to you, and you will start typing effortlessly. But before that happens do not betempted to look at the keyboard. Just do it one step at a time. Start with letters likeAAAAAAA then go to SSSSSS or AS AS AS etc. Type a whole page or two of these. Theidea here is not rushing and getting things wrong. It is going slow at first and letting yourfingers get used to the right keys. Once you master the keyboard everything will fall intoplace.

3. Type with both your hands

This is one thing that slows your speeds; typing with two fingers. A friend of mine used tocall it wood-pecking. You type letter F and then take 30 seconds looking for letter Y.Imagine if you were typing a 20-page document. How long do you think it would take youto complete it? You might sit there a whole day staring at the computer wondering why youare not moving forward. The correct homes are: A, S, D, F for the left hand side and J, K, L,; for the right hand side. This is well laid out in the above image.

4. Take typing speed tests

There are so many online typing test sites these days. One of them is typingtest.com. Thisis a great site that has typing tests, courses and games that you can take advantage of.They claim to be the number one resource and I believe they are. When you take the testyou will be able to see how many words per minute you’ve typed. The wrong words thatyou got and an overall score will be given. Time yourself just 30 minutes a day for the next30 days and you will see a difference in your speeds. You will be able to type fast, getwords correctly and it will be so much fun!

5. Practice! Practice! Practice

Once you master how to type do not sit back and say, “I’ve achieved my goal. Now I don’tneed to do this anymore.” No. That’s a wrong way of approaching typing. Typing is anactivity that you do on a daily basis. Even if you do not have work that day look for booksonline and type or go to forums or Facebook or chatrooms. The idea here is for you tokeep typing. Always pressing your keys and having them engrained in your musclememory.
