From seeing the amount of time many companies put into creating their logos, slogans and other items that signify what they do, it is clear that these items are important. However, in other areas the value of creative decisions may be a little less clear.



For instance, does a company’s choice of domain name really make a difference? If it does make a difference, what characteristics should a good domain name have?



First of all, you should understand that domain names serve a specific purpose that even a company name often does not. That is, they provide the specific way that a customer or other person can reach your website.



For that reason, there are some specific criteria that domain names should always follow. One of the most important things to consider is how easy the name is to remember. After all, you want visitors to be able to recall and type in the web address quickly and easily.



In the past and even to this day, many companies have adopted distinctive, easy to remember phone numbers that they often incorporate heavily into their commercials or even into radio jingles.



These days, a distinctive, easy to remember domain name is very similar in that you want customers to recall it on a moment’s notice so they can access your website.



Part of making domain names easy to remember is tying them in a logical way to what your business does or what the name of your business is. Now, if you can get a web address that simply consists of your company’s name, that may often be the best way to go.



However, you can even improve upon that or if your company’s name is very long (such as with law firms that have several different last names included in their company name, for instance), you should certainly do so.



You also have to consider search engine optimization(SEO) when choosing a domain name. Your domain name does not necessarily have to be your proper company name or should be.



Let me explain. When a person wants to find out information about a subject, they often use a search engine, like Google.com, to look for the information. What a person using a search engine does is type in a word or group of words that identify the topic or product and press enter.



Google then reaches deep down in its computer systems and returns with a list of results. What Google displays is a list of websites they believe is directly related to the searched keyword. Search engines like Google give more authority to a domain name if the keyword the person searched for is included in the domain name.



Google is more likely to show your domain name higher in the results if it includes the keyword. Based on those facts, you should also consider including the main keyword your website is about in your domain name if you can. If you decide to follow this advice, make sure the keyword you choose is searched for regularly. Right now, domain names have joined slogans, logos and even company names themselves as items that are very important in establishing brand identity. They can make it clear to customers what you do or even establish a good first impression with those who are encountering your business for the first time.
