What is an Introvert?

• Introverts are not inherently shy or withdrawn, but instead often get their best energy by working solo. When around others for too long they may find themselves drained or overwhelmed.

• Introverts may take more time to think before they speak, or allow others to dominate and lead conversation in meetings. They gain energy and inspiration from spending time alone and thinking things through.

So how do you engage them?

Help staff prepare in advance

• Before a meeting ask for written discussion items

• Communicate the agenda and expectations clearly so no one will be caught off guard, try sending out talking points beforehand so people can brainstorm

Don’t let one member dominate discussion

• Allocate time for each employee to speak without interruption, this makes meetings more effective because everyone gets to voice their opinion

Create opportunities for everyone to lead

• Take this step a little bit further with giving everyone an opportunity to present

• Try letting different people lead meetings, this gives everyone a chance to run their own agenda and allows introverts to become more comfortable with leadership roles and working with the team as a whole

• You don’t have to make this a necessity but a potential option for those people who tend to get overshadowed

Give people time to process

• Introverts like to think over things before giving a definitive response– let them

• Brainstorming in groups is great, but allow time for people to process the information before settling on a final solution

Consider individual or smaller group projects

• Collaborative efforts are great. However, introverts can get overwhelmed and sometimes not as productive

• Allow people to sometimes break off into smaller groups or as individuals to tackle aspects of a project. This allows them to come back strong and with things to contribute to the team

Encourage everyone to work at public speaking

• This works for all types of employees:- Extroverts: can hone in on their skills - Introverts: can become more

comfortable with making their opinions known in group settings

• Try hiring a leadership coach to come in and work with your team both individually and group settings
