Digital whats?Quite honestly, we didn’t know what a “digital
portfolio” was, either.
...Well, we had some ideas, but we had to do a lot of reading and research - Hence our choice in Complex
Reasoning Process, DoL 4 - Investigation.
We modelled our questions after those of Definitional Investigation (Marzano & Pickering, 1997, p. 236).

• Collection of work samples
• Hard work!
• Showcase classroom activities
• A tick for ICT use
• Collection of resources for a topic
• I don’t know, something online?
Brainstorm When asked, people said:

Our definition
Our investigation and discussions lead us to our own definition - this was heavily influenced
by blogs, networking with schools & professionals, our own experiences, research, and texts.

DoL 4 - Investigation Digital portfolios are an electronic collection of
purposeful evidence that demonstrate a learning journey, which also supports the
assessment process for learning, and provides learners with opportunities to self-assess and reflect on their learning journey, as well as
communicating with and providing relevant evidence to appropriate stakeholders

DoL 4 - Investigation
Digital Portfolios should:
Be an assessment FOR learning (not OF learning)
Remember that!

Digital Portfolio: Looks like? What exactly does a Digital Portfolio look like?
How do you imagine Digital Portfolios look, sound and feel? How would people interact
with them?

Do you use social networking sites?Did you post what you ate for breakfast on Facebook th is morning? Think of how connected the current generation going through school is right now - it’s quite possible that students in your Early Childhood classes have had an online presence since birth! Tweet that!

Digital Portfolio: Looks like?• Web 2.0 tools (Wiki, Blog, Website)
• Portable e-devices (iPod, iPad, iPhone, e-Readers, laptops, etc)
• Digital storage media (flash drives, CD-ROM, DVD, Portable Hard Drives, etc)
Technologies that could be used:
There are infinite possibilities, and as more technologies emerge, this field will continue expanding...
That’s why it’s important to be life long learners!
(You get to explore some of these tools in Managing e-Learning)
Do you have an example? Have you seen Digital Portfolios in use?Friday, 2 August 13

Reflective practice: Blogging•Assessment was to deliver a “Pecha Kucha”* style presentation on our own “innovative” artwork •Criteria was to research 3 artists from different art periods and incorporate elements into own artwork
*Pecha Kucha is a presentation style, where you have 20 slides which automatically transition every 20 seconds

Digital Portfolio 101Remember: Digital Portfolios are used as an assessment FOR learning, not OF learning.
So, you want to use digital portfolios in assessment and reporting. Have you considered the logistics?
Using digital portfolios has great advantages, but there’s also a lot of considerations to make prior to embracing
the technology. You don’t want a digital disaster of clutter and files showcasing your student’s learning journey!
O’Rouke (2004) has a list of 10 key steps!

Digital Portfolio 101Remember: Digital Portfolios are used as an assessment FOR learning, not OF learning.
1- Clarify the purpose
2- Start small
3- Develop focus areas
4- Develop indicators for each focus area

Now, let’s get this straight...
It is not: It is:
Technology for ICT sake
Assessment for learning
Mandated artefacts
Dumping ground of work samples
Student’s expression of own journey
Communication and reporting tool
Has a purpose
An assessment OF learning:the understandings,
processes, skills or aptitudes
Digital Portfolio 101
(Assessment Reform Group, 2002, Barrett, 2005)Friday, 2 August 13
Digital Portfolio 101Dr. Helen Barrett (digital portfolio hero) says:
•Create an environment about participation!•Digital Folios should have Intrinsic Motivation - not “necessity”- this provides engagement
• {CQ + PQ} > IQ{Curiosity Quota + Passion Quota} > Intelligence Quota
Kids who are curious and passionate will achieve mastery over digital technologies, it is not a matter of intelligence.
