There has been a shift in the core skills in the role of the business analyst, moving from ‘puzzle builders’ to ‘mystery solvers’. Change needs to be done on a company-culture level, not just a skills level. Be mindful that organisational culture should be the starting point. There is a continuous need to find the middle ground between design thinking, commercial thinking and engineering thinking. Product owners needs to be involved when gathering information. Business analysts need to ask “what is the customer’s journey”? As different tools become more readily available, business analysts need to continue to make collaboration a priority, as well as building relationships across organisations to gain further trust. Smaller iterations need to be considered in order to manage deliverables and expectations. It is important to question the value that we want to get out of documentation. BAs need to embrace the shift in collaborating across the business. Ask “what is the purpose?”. Design through acceptance criteria – go deep enough for the value to be tangible.
