Hello, I’m
Brittany PetersLet me tell you more about
myself!
Through my educational
background and my long
years in retail, I’ve developed
excellent communication and
customer service skills. I’d like
to highlight what I’ve learned
and how I’ve improved myself
through real life and
educational experiences.
Currently, I’m a senior B.S. Economics
major at West Virginia University.
I started my college education in 2005
with the help of the Promise Scholarship
and a Presidential Scholarship awarded
to me through the university.
I served as Treasurer for the Residence Hall
Association for one year. It was a great fit
to work with people and deal with
money, as I did in my work at Kroger.
In 2008, I became ill and had to withdraw
from the university and move back in with
my parents in order to recover.
I was out of school for almost 3 years, and
went through a lot to re-enroll.
Since returning to school in 2011, I’ve
been working to pay my own way
through school.
I’ve received state and federal grants to
help with the costs of school.
For more than 9
years, I’ve been an
employee of Kroger, and
have worked in four
different stores.
I began my time with Kroger in
Cross Lanes, WV, my
hometown.
I started as a bagger, and was quickly
promoted to cashier.
I had little to no formal training, but I easily
dealt with the public and knew many of
the customers that came to our store by
name.
When I started attending WVU, I
applied and was accepted at
the Patteson Drive Kroger here in
Morgantown.
I was promoted again, this time to
attending the customer service desk and
supervising the front end.
When I withdrew from school
and started to live with my
parents again, I moved to
Roanoke, VA. I transferred to
the Hollins, VA Kroger and
started to work there for 20
hours a week as soon as I was
able. I supervised and attended the service
desk, and I began to train in file
maintenance there.
I began working in more departments at
the Hollins Kroger, and experienced more
than just the front end operations. I found
I could use my skills with people to help in
departments other than the front and
provide excellent customer service no
matter where I was in the store.
When I was recovered and
ready to return to the university,
I moved back to Morgantown.
I had lived in Virginia for almost two
years, and was considered an out of state
student when I first returned to
Morgantown.
I returned to my old job at the Patteson
Drive Kroger and persisted until I was able
to return to school in Fall 2011.
Armed with my new knowledge of
operations besides the front end, I found I
was much better able to provide great
customer service and answer questions.
I continued to learn more and more how
communication between the front end
and the other departments could
improve the overall customer experience
and provide a smoother transaction for
everyone involved.
In June 2012, I was given the
opportunity for a promotion if I
moved to the Sabraton Kroger. I would be given the position of back-up
file maintenance clerk and would
continue to work on the front end in the
service desk and as supervisor. I agreed
and transferred in early July.
Making the move to a new store was a big
change, but in the end it helped me to
develop my people skills even further.
The customers were a different type from
what I was used to, and I had to learn a
different way of communicating and
problem-solving to satisfy their needs and
answer their questions.
In April 2013, the file
maintenance clerk became
the head of frozen foods, and I
was asked to fill the vacancy. This was a promotion, and my new title
would put me in charge of all of the
signs, tags, and price changes
throughout the store.
I accepted, even though I was concerned
I wouldn’t be able to use my skills with the
customers to their full potential from this
new role.
I came to find that my superior
customer service attitude was
still helpful even when I wasn’t
on the front end. A store reset, which involved moving items
and putting them in new locations, had
customers asking a lot more questions of
people who were on the floor working.
I pride myself on two aspects of my job
now: keeping the pricing correct and
attaining 100% scanning accuracy, and
still keeping the customer first attitude that
I’d cultivated from the beginning of my
time with Kroger.
Throughout the years, I’ve
discovered new skills I didn’t
know I had:
I was able to explain a cell phone plan in
Spanish that is difficult to explain even in
English.
I never thought of myself as much as a
disciplinarian, but I found myself falling into
the role more and more as I supervised
the front end more and more.
I’ve learned a lot from my
time working with Kroger,
and expect to learn even
more as time goes on. I hope
to keep moving on in my
career and look forward to
many more years with the
company!
Thanks for getting to know me!
