Problem:

How to create a mobile social network here and now?

Here: ETH HG E 5.When: Event MoMo11 = NowWith: What is there, meaning „connected“ devices.

Why?Because that is a possibility we have with mobile:To reach people „here and now“.

Page 5: Finding your way with QR codes and communities

MoMo 11: Mobile Social Networks

ETH Zürich #hge5http://dokodare.kaywa.com/202033335

Problem continued:

How to create a mobile social network here and now?

1.* Identity: Verified Username (Email, SMS)2. Location: „I am here now“3. Communication: Be able to write

* Some services like Foursquare seem not to verify the username

Page 6: Finding your way with QR codes and communities

MoMo 11: Mobile Social Networks

Possible Solutions?

How many people are in the room?55

Do we reach 2/3?- How many Facebook Accounts? 49- How many Twitter Accounts? 35- How many people with direct access to Email accounts? 50

Conclusion„Ok, with this audience, I could leave now... And we could all continue onFacebook ;). But then would come the next problem, we would need tobecome friends with each other. With Twitter the case would be a bit simpler,as we could all adopt the #hge5 to find each other.“

1. Creating a verified Identity: Possibilities

AppAs an Example: Try „Foursquare“ on the App Store (Android, iPhone)

Web Form / Email- Delay can be a problem (5-20 minutes)- Not everybody uses email on his phone+ international; - delay, long process, reach

SMS- (Sunrise, Swisscom) Send SMS to 202 with NEWID yourusername (CHF 0.20) Replace yourusername with what you want, ex. NEWID Max+ quick and reaches most; - long numbers if international, delays

Others?- Use an existing ID (Twitter, Facebook, Google, OpenID)? Apps?+ international; - long usernames, still too complicated

1. Creating a verified Identity: SMS Example

(Swisscom, Sunrise, CHF 0.20)

SMS to 202withNEWID yourusername

⇒And you get back the password.

An ID needs:- Username- Verified Phone number- Password

1. Creating a verified Identity: Numbers

App- How many would we reach here and now? As the network was down, only 1 person could download the app.

Web Form / E-Mail- How many would we reach here and now? 50 (if network would work)

SMS- How many would we reach here and now? * Swisscom, Sunrise: 44 ; Orange: 8 * Other: 3 (one = no mobile phone ; two from foreign countries) * 11 tried and 9 got an immediate response, the two others with 2 minutes delay. SMS is still king!

ConclusionUnder the live conditions SMS beats everything else. Email would be thesecond choice as 50 from 55 have access to their email.

2. Location: Two Steps

- Accessing the service- Locate Me and communicate it to the service

PS:On Foursquare App, you find #hge5 at:http://foursquare.com/venue/387542

On DokoDare, you find #hge5 at:http://dokodare.kaywa.com/202033335

2. Location: Possibilities

App with Google Maps / GPS / Compass- Going to service, Log in- 1. Can you locate room HG E 5? Try with Google Maps- 2. Possibility: Suggest places nearby...

Webaddress- http://dokodare.kaywa.com/202033335 or http://foursquare.com/venue/387542- Log in, then Check in

QR Code (Web) QR Code (SMS)- Scan the QR Code - Scan the QR Code- Log in + Check in - Send SMS

SMS (if ID verified with SMS)- Send SMS to 202 with Checkin 202033335 This sends you also back the link to go online

Page 14: Finding your way with QR codes and communities

2. Location: Numbers

App with Google Maps / GPS / Compass- How many GPS enabled phones: 50- iPhones: 13 / Android: 7 / Nokia: 16 / Windows Mobile: 3- Other Phones: 15

Web address-Have all mobile internet enabled devices? Yes, all 54 with phones.

QR Code- How many can scan a QR Code? 11 could scan.

ConclusionPractically all have internet access and GPS (50/54). One fifth (11/54) couldeven scan the QR Code from the screen. So a combination of GPS and QRCodes would certainly be best.In our test case GPS would help to narrow down the places nearby, but itwould still need an additional search for #hge5.

3. Communication: Possibilities

Trough App- If location failed, communicate location as well: „@MoMoSwitzerland : I am at MoMoSwitzerland11 at #hge5“. Through #hge5, messages are bundled.

Web Address- From Main Place Page, click Kaykus- (After Checkin, click People tab to write a Kayku now)

QR Code (Default Place Code) - Scan the QR Code- Click Kaykus, write: „@MoMoSwitzerland : I am at MoMoSwitzerland11“

SMS (if checked in)- Send SMS to 202 with TXT @MoMoSwitzerland : I am at MoMoSwitzerland11

Page 16: Finding your way with QR codes and communities

3. Communication only via SMS

Page 17: Finding your way with QR codes and communities

MoMo 11: Mobile Social Networks

ETH Zürich #hge5http://dokodare.kaywa.com/202033335

3. Communication: Numbers

Trough App- The ones that did use the Foursquare App? Could you write something?

SMS (if ID verified with SMS)- Did it work? Can you see your posting at http://dokodare.kaywa.com/202033335

ConclusionDue to time reasons, we rushed on checkin and writing some text. There werestill some who went to checkin on Foursquare, DokoDare and although Twitter.

From these solutions, what do you prefer?:

Remember:1. Identity, 2. Location, 3. Communication

- Web/E-Mail/Web? 18- App? Depends on the situation.- All SMS? Nobody- SMS-Web? 17- SMS-QR Code-Web? Depends on the situation.

ConclusionWeb either initiated by SMS or Email still gets the highest preference (35/54).Whereas both Apps and QR Codes make sense in certain contexts.

Page 19: Finding your way with QR codes and communities

ETH Zürich #hge5http://dokodare.kaywa.com/202033335

What has probably the biggest reach?

- Web/E-Mail/Web?- App?- All SMS? All 55!- SMS-Web? 17- SMS-QR Code-Web?

ConclusionIf we talk reach, the whole audience agrees that „All SMS“ has still the biggestreach, followed by SMS initiated and then continued on the Web.

My prefered solutions:

For visibility at the place:- SMS: Create ID- Sticker with QR Code- On the Web: Checkin + Writing

Without QR Code:- SMS: Create ID, Checkin- On the web: Writing

When targeting only advanced users:- Apps Note: E-Mail was not verified on Foursquare!

Final thoughts

Educated Audience- Web access, Email, GPS were a given (almost everybody)- Even though Switzerland is an iPhone country (0.5 Mio iPhones this year) and Android is already strong, almost two thirds (7 out of 11) would be excluded when using only an app.- Installed QR Code Readers are comparable with iPhone penetration in this audience. Could this be true also for a larger swiss audience?

SMSEven if only 1/3 (17) think SMS is the best way for this, all conclude that it hasstill the widest reach. Therefore we recommend to always use SMS asan alternative to all other methods.

Identity through Twitter, Facebook, others?Raphael Briner from HyperWeek thinks that these two will become some ofthe defacto identity providers in the future.Christine Perey works also on identity management and hopefully we will soonsee a specific MobileMonday on this topic.
