We are living in an ever-changing environment, which can leave people feeling confused, vulnerable and even angry.

For a team to achieve a competitive advantage it must ‘get its house in order’ and create a ‘mist-free’ environment.

Get Your House in Order is a metaphor for creating a holistic strategy that will align individuals to team objectives, processes and values.

It requires a ‘whole-brain’ approach!

START WITH A VISION

!!Getting your house in order starts with a vision. A high performance team is one that has purpose and direction. !If your team is part of a larger organisation, it will need to be strategically aligned to the business goals. !To achieve this you will need to identify with a desired future state and vision. As a team, you’ll need to agree what ‘great’ looks and feels like and create an urgency to move away from the current situation.

You’ll need to unpick your vision into results. When doing this for yourself or with your team you can generate as many as you like. !The aim is to identify with 4-5 objectives that will really make a difference to the performance of your team. !The results will need to be specific, measurable and within a certain timeframe. !

!!You now have a vision, which has been broken down into results, the next step is to create a process or system (a machine) that will deliver the results. !A good process is key for achieving consistency. !The key to implementing successful processes and performance indicators is to align them to the results, which are aligned to the vision. !However just the left side or ‘left hemisphere’ is not enough to create a high performing team.

Now that you have a vision, results to achieve the vision and solid processes in place to deliver the results. It’s now time to engage the right hemisphere. !Without the right behaviours your team will not achieve its full potential. !You may find a focus on results and systems work for a period of time but your team will fail in the long run without the correct behaviours driving them. !The left side or ‘left-hemisphere’ alone simply isn’t enough!

Image and branding are important to some more than others. Image may not be important to you, however Image and branding at both personal and team level are key factors when developing a holistic strategy. !The aim is to define what you stand for as a team. !What do you want people saying about you? How do you want to be seen by others? What is your mission statement? !This will help your team focus on external factors such as stakeholders, clients and even the competition.

Your house in nearly in order, but without values it is built on sloppy sand. !Team values are the foundations for driving the right behaviours. !Values are essential for achieving a competitive advantage. !Your team will need to believe in the values and the values will need to be aligned to their own personal values, thus creating an emotional connection rather than just a set of words. !They have to live and breathe them!

ABOUT ANDREW

Andrew is the owner and founder of Managing The Mist LLP. He is an experienced coach, speaker and the author of Managing the Mist: How to develop winning mind-sets and create high performing teams.

His intuitive and radical approach to leadership development, team performance and organisational change has inspired many to take action towards reaching their goals.
