Rise of the Versatilist and the Quest for Talent

04/12/23Vanderbilt I n f o r m a t i o n T e c h n o l o g y S e r v i c e s 9

•70% of leading edge companies will seek to develop “versatilists”: A person who can apply a depth of skill to a rich scope of situations and experiences (Gartner).

•Have many perspectives and competencies•Build alliances and relationships•Can fill many roles and offer greater insight in a cross organizational team•Can help companies quickly incorporate innovation because they have a mastery of aptitude, local knowledge, industry knowledge, and leadership

•Profile of a versatilist (Gartner):•Experience outside current role in business unit, technology, region, and industry segment•Growth that comes from facing challenges and roles outside of comfort zone•Experiences outside the world of corporate business in non-profit, start-ups, government, and consumer based IT experiences•Continuing education in advanced degree•Works with companies, projects assignments, and education that increases their professional value

Talent Development

04/12/23Vanderbilt I n f o r m a t i o n T e c h n o l o g y S e r v i c e s 10

•There is a rising demand for well rounded technology professionals that can see all sides of the business problem – customer, cost, business need, business outcomes, technology, and delivery

•This demand will be poorly met with our current work force as very few people have the hybrid mix of business, technology, and professional acumen

•Current work force (digital immigrant) is retiring in large groups over the next 5-15 years and do not have the experiences of the “digital native”

•New work force (digital native) is entering market and does not have the seasoned business or technology skills of the digital immigrant

•In 1990, a shortage of skills such as Java, ERP, etc could be taught. In 2008, teaching someone to be a seasoned hybrid of business, technology, and professionalism is difficult.

•This gap is impacting how business develops, grows, and sustains itself; as well as cause conflicts in the work place between the digital native and the digital immigrant

•SharePoint and InfoPath Pilots– 30 departments and growing•Microsoft Live Office – Higher Education Beta site• Google Apps – Application API Integration ready for release• Video Conferencing – Cross institutional conferences• Pod Casting Room – Students using it for Web 2.0 class

•Recruitment of employees – We will hire a well rounded person over a technical expert who specializes. Leadership is key- All else can be taught.•Use of Open Source with Commercial Products to offer services – Sun Identity Management•IT as a Service – Buying security management services, Live Office, GoogleApps

Think about….

04/12/23Vanderbilt I n f o r m a t i o n T e c h n o l o g y S e r v i c e s 12

•If you had to develop IT talent and organizations, how would you go about it?•How would you develop a well rounded college graduate that came out of school with the mix of technology, business, and professional skills that could fill seasoned leadership and contributor roles?•How would you prepare and change existing work force for this skills gap?•How would you change the classroom or training programs to meet this demand?•How would you steer your organization as this shift in the IT direction takes place?•How would you recruit this type of employee as well as retain them?•If you had an IT job, what would you like it to be?•How should education change as the job market changes?
