DANCE GENRE

Page 2: music video analysis

GOODWIN’S THEORY (THE 6 KEY FEATURES)Genre Characteristics: This music video has stereotypical features which are associated with dance music videos but

there are also other elements which are not always associated with the genre. Typically in dance music videos there are girls which usually wear very little clothing and have a dance routine however in this video the main focus is on a young boy and how he dances which is stereotypically but the idea of girls in little clothing is not in this video. This is a narrative music video as it tells a story of how once he turns on his music he and everyone who sees him dances. This narrative idea would therefore go against the idea of a dance genre music video.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals: There is not really any direct link between the lyrics and the visuals. This is because the song and lyrics of ‘I wish you were mine’ would imply that there is someone who is in love with another person but they don’t have the same feelings. However the video is just of a boy dancing and how everyone around him dances as well. There is no link between the lyrics and the visuals.

Relationship between music and visuals: The music and video conform well together throughout the music video. This is because when the song slows down the clips on show in the video are slower paced and there are less cuts of different clips. However when the music speeds up then the clips are a shorter length of time but the cuts are quicker and more frequent showing different scenes. For example when the chorus begins with ‘I wish that you were mine’ there are a lot of quick clips of the people dancing but when the main verse goes on the clips are longer to show more of that clip but they’re slower paced. Close ups: Throughout this music video there are various different close up shots. These shots are usually of the people’s facial expressions when the see other people dancing throughout the video. This is to focus on these aspects which the editors are aiming to focus the audience on.

Reference of notice and looking: there was no reference of notice and looking as the majority of the shots were filmed outside.

Intertexual Reference: This music video does not have any other reference to other media aspects for example film.

GOODWIN’S THEORY (5 KEY ASPECTS)

Thought beats: This song by Philip George conforms to their usual sound and mode of song of dance/beat in the majority of their other songs. The song begins with a low tempo beat which builds up as the song progresses. Philip George usually has a vocalist singer in his music to go with his DJ set however this vocalist is not always the same person. Therefore this makes it more difficult for the audience to understand who is singing. Throughout this song there is one vocalist singer which is common in each of Philip George’s songs. The song itself tells a story of a boy who dances to his music and everyone around him dances implying that his dance is almost a ‘diasease’ which these other people catch. There is no real connection between the visuals and the vocals as the lyrics ‘wish you were mine’ implies that there is a connection between 2 people but this video shows no signs to this. Therefore the is no general theme on show throughout the whole music video and the video is almost a little random

Narrative and performance: The visuals in this video do not fit in well with the lyrics. This is because the lyrics imply that one person has a love for another person but maybe that person does not share the same feelings hence the lyrics ‘I wish that you were mine’ but the video does not have any possible relationships in, simply the other people dancing with the boy. The video pace is slower and has fewer cuts when the tempo of the song drops and speeds up with more cuts as the pace increases. Therefore this is a link between visuals and song tempo but in terms of lyrics there is little connection.

GOODWIN’S THEORY (5 KEY ASPECTS)

Star image: throughout this video there is one main star being the boy. However this boy is a random person and not the artist Philip George, however the main boy is on show in practically every shot throughout this video as this allows the audience to relate with him and helps them to understand the story which they are trying to put across. There are shots of other people in the video that automatically dance when they see the boy dancing coming back to the idea of the dance being a ‘disease’ but generally the video is focused upon the main boy.

Relation of visuals to the song: The visuals throughout this song illustrate the lyrics to a certain extent such as when the lyrics ‘you’re the only girl my heart beats for’ the word beats fits in well with the tempo of the song which has a reasonable amount of beats in that passage. However the song lyrics largely connote to an idea of the love which a boy has for a ‘girl’ and yet there is no scene of a girl in this video so if this was to have been included there would have been an even greater relation between the visuals and the song.

Technical aspects: The editing pace generally fits well with the sound and tempo speeding up and down. There is a wider range of different camera shots and angles used such as close ups of the people relating to seeing the boy dancing which helps to put across the idea that they cannot help themselves from not dancing when they see the boy. The video is set in one location being a normal town but there are different location shots within this town such as in the supermarket, on the bus and in the boy’s house and on the streets. This helps to show the audience understand that the ‘dance disease’ spreads over a wide range and also helps them to see the life of the boy and what he does every day. The colour and lighting are usually bright throughout this video to make it a happier video and help imply that the boy is happy throughout the video.
