SynopsisBillionaire Oprah Winfrey is best known for hosting her own internationally popular talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the highest rated program of its kind in history and nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. She is also an actress, philanthropist, publisher and producer.

Oprah• Born 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi

• Spent her early years in house without electricity and running water.

• She learned to read at home, and skipped kindergarten to go straight into first grade.

• Education and books helped Oprah to realize that this was not all that there was in life.

• Attended TSU in 1971 and majored in speech communication and performing arts.

An Early Journalist

• At the age of 19, began working at WVOL radio in Nashville as a reporter.• At 19 years old, she became youngest

person and 1st African-American woman to anchor the news at WTVF-TV.• In 1977, Co-anchor the Six O-Clock

News in Baltimore.• Co-host of local talk show, People Are

Talking at Baltimore.

Turning Point

• In 1984 she hosted WLS-TV’s half hour morning talk show, AM Chicago• Within a month, Show became

the dominant talk show in Chicago• The show expanded to one hour

and was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show

Success story• Harpo, Inc., was established in

1986• Enjoyed substantial savings on

agents and managers during the first year of the company operation• In October 1988, she became

the first woman in history to own and produce her own talk show• She hired her former boss, as

Chief operating officer to build corporate department

• In November 1998, Oprah invested in oxygen media LLC

• In 2000, Oprah launch O, The Oprah Magazine, Which serves as a personal growth guide in the new century.

• She also created a motivational “Live Your Best Life” tour that was attended by 8500 women.

• Oprah is an owner and chair of Harpo, Inc.; Harpo Production; Harpo Studio, Inc.; Harpo Films, Inc.; Harpo Print LLC; and Harpo Video Inc., with a total net worth of $1 billion

• As a result of her contribution , in 1998 she was named one of the most influential people of 20th century by Times Magazine.
