Flowering and Fruiting Habit The trees are deciduous, shedding the leaves in the dry season. Flowering occurs during the wet season and two flowering peaks are often seen. In permanently humid regions, flowering occurs throughout the year. The seeds mature about 3 months after flowering. Early growth is fast and with good rainfall conditions, nursery plants may bear fruits after the first rainy season and direct sown plants after the second rainy season. The flowers are pollinated by

insects especially honey bees.

Jatropha Curcas grows almost anywhere, even on gravelly, sandy, and saline soils. It can thrive on the poorest, stony soil. It can grow even in the crevices of rocks. The leaves shed during the winter months form mulch around the base of the plant. The organic matter from the shed leaves enhance earthworm activity in the soil around the root-zone of the plants, which

improves the overall fertility of the soil.

Jatropha curcas is a non-edible fuel stock. Growing and using jatropha will not affect the price of food stock, such as corn, grain, and sugar, all of which are currently being used to fuel cars.  If the United States was to consider using edible food stock to fuel the 800 million cars the 2 billion people in worlds poorest nations would suffer due to the rise in food prices. When Brazil started using sugar for fuel in 2005, the price of sugar doubled in just 18 months.Crude oil prices are getting close to $100.00 a barrel and are expected to hit $150.00 a barrel within the next few years.

The use of biodiesel is helping to ease the pain in some American wallets. Sales of bio-fuels  have jumped from 2 million gallons a year in 2000 to 250 million gallons in 2006. More and more government agencies, private companies, corporations, and private citizens are joining in the use of the renewable resource.

Jatropha Jatropha is a small but versatile bush/tree from the Euphorbiaceae family. The tree flowers and produces clusters of about 10-15 fruits with a seed containing high concentrations of oil. Jatropha Curcas L. is gaining a lot of attention as a potential feedstock for biodiesel production due to its high oil content and ability to grow in less than

ideal conditions.

Because jatropha likes heat and requires very little rainfall to flourish, making it drought-resistant, it puts no demand on local water sources and can still provide a source of income when other cash crops are affected by

any kind of drought.

Under the right conditions, jatropha seeds can contain up to 47% oil which can be used to produce cheap renewable biodiesel from a plant that can live up to 45 years and is known to live 60 + years. Another use for the plant is biomass which can be burned, similar to coal, to produce energy. The oil can even be used raw to produce heat for an oil burning heat system. A byproduct of biodiesel production is glycerin which can be used

to make an organic soap.

Current diesel engines can be run on this environmentally friendly fuel with little or no modifications. Engines that run a 20% mixture will usually require no modifications, where as using 100% biodiesel will require changing of some rubber parts. Biodiesel has even been shown to clean an engine and help it run more smoothly. Although studies have shown some power loss may occur from using biodiesel, about 2-10 hp, jatropha has been shown to be one of the most

efficient oils to use in the production of biofuel.

Jatropha Curcas (tuba-tuba) is primarily a deciduous plant from the family Euphorbiaceae. It was initially used as valuable hedge plant and was exported from central America to Asia and Africa by Portuguese traders. Here in the United States, jatropha plant has well known medicinal properties and used for curing different ailments. The mature jatropha trees bear male and female inflorescence and can grow to a height of three meters..

Processed oil from crushed mature seeds can be used in existing diesel engines while the residue can also be processed into biomass as fuel for electricity generating plants. The seed cake, a by-product of oil production can be used as a natural organic fertilizer rich in nitrogen,

Here either in the same screw press – two-stage pressing is carried out or prepressed cake from first stage screw press in sent for second pressing to other screw press. Any kind of oil-bearing seed can be processed in oil mill, preparatory equipments are recommended prior to expelling. Pressed cake can be sold after recovering the max. Oil Hence, double

pressing system is recommended.

The process of converting vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel is called Transesterification and is luckily less complex then it sounds.Chemically, Transesterification means taking a triglyceride molecule, or a complex fatty acid, neutralizing the free fatty acids, removing the glycerin, and creating an alcohol ester.

This is accomplished by mixing methanol with sodium hydroxide to make sodium methoxide. This liquid is then mixed into the vegetable oil. After the mixture has settled, Glycerin is left on the bottom and methyl esters, or biodiesel is left on top and is washed and filtered.

Lower Cost of Production – Jatropha has a lower cost of production than many other oils because its chemical make-up is so close to diesel. The energy needed to produce Jatropha oil is less than 10 percent of the oil obtained. Because Jatropha can be produced inexpensively, it can be sold at prices lower than gasoline. Many industry experts predict that in the next 10 years Jatropha will become the major biodiesel oil feedstock other

than soybeans and canola (rapeseed).

Better than Diesel – At the same power output, Jatropha oil consumption and efficiencies are higher than diesel fuel (2000-2006 University of Orleans study). Better than Gasoline – At maximal load conditions, Jatropha gives better results than gasoline because of its high oxygen content.

Continental Airlines (CAL.N) ran a two-hour test flight in January of a Boeing (BA.N) 737 passenger plane powered with a mix of jatropha and algae-based biodiesel, following the lead of Japanese and New Zealand airline companies. "The biofuel mix actually ran more efficiently and burned less fuel in total than the conventional (jet-fuel powered) engine,"

Steve Lott, a spokesman for the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, said. The airline industry will consume 67 billion gallons of fuel this year, or 6 percent of the world's oil, a concern for environmentalists as well as airline budgets, especially after the spike in gas prices last year, Lott said. The IATA wants all its members to use 10 percent renewable fuels by 2017. The challenge will be to ramp up output of green fuels at a rate fast enough to meet growing demand.

The Carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere when biofuel is burned is recycled by growing plants, which are later processed into fuel. Thus, the CO2 emission of Jatropha oil can be assumed almost zero. For this reason, a project which aims to exploit the potential of Jatropha Curcas as energy crop owns all

requisites to be eligible within the CDM

The study concluded that biodiesel yields 3.2 units of fuel product energy for every unit of fossil fuel consumed while petroleum diesel yields 0.83 units. Additionally, the study concluded that, over a lifecycle, that biodiesel

reduces net CO2 emissions by 78%.

Biodiesel, a clean burning, renewable diesel fuel replacement made from vegetable oils especially jatropha oil can be used as a pure fuel or blended with petroleum in any percentage. B5 is a blend of 5% Biodiesel and 95% by volume of petroleum diesel. B20 is a blend of 20 percent by volume Biodiesel with 80 percent by volume petroleum diesel. Biodiesel has a very similar energy value per gallon as diesel, so there is no reduction in vehicle performance when using this alternative fuel.

President George W. Bush signed into law the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) on December 19, 2007. The legislation was designed to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil by increasing the supply of alternative fuels. EISA requires increased biofuel production, 36 billion by 2022, and must be met, in part, from biodiesel. Demand for the eco-friendly fuel could grow now that U.S. President Barack Obama has promised to invest $150 billion over 10 years in renewable energy infrastructure.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon recently announced a $85 million pilot project to produce biodiesel from non-food crops like jatropha and castor oil plant so as not to avert food crops from the mouths of its hungry populace, EcoAméricas reports. Cost is a major factor here: as the cost of convention diesel has increased to 60 cents a liter ($2.30 a gallon) in Mexico, jatropha is suddenly looking pretty good at 50 cents a liter ($1.90 a gallon). The government will require the state-owned oil monopoly, Petróleos Mexicanos, known as Pemex, to buy biodiesel from small-scale producers to boost the market and streamline alternative fuels into its distribution system.

Global production of biofuels is growing steadily and will continue to do so despite financial slowdown. The world biofuel market’s value is likely to attain a CAGR of around 14.7% during 2006-2016. Auto giant DaimlerChrysler has been researching, planting and testing jatropha and a biodiesel derived from its oil for the past three years in Gujarat, in northwest India. The project has created a jatropha-euphoria in the poverty-stricken region, with the local farmers who participated seeing a great future in the energy crop.

Demand for biodiesel is expected to continue to grow. However, the anticipated expansion of existing feedstock supplies in the short term has the potential to produce at least 1.8 billion gallons of biodiesel by 2012. If the development of longer-term feedstock prospects is realized, the potential supply of biodiesel feedstock will keep

pace with future demand for biodiesel.

A study by the Freedonia Group Inc. says that demand for biofuels throughout the world will grow by 20 percent a year to 92 million metric tons in 2011.

America’s biodiesel industry will add $24 billion to the U.S. economy between 2005 and 2015, assuming biodiesel growth reaches 650 million gallons of annual production by 2015. Biodiesel production will create a projected 39,102 new jobs in all sectors of the economy. Additional tax revenues from biodiesel production will more than pay for the federal tax incentives provided to the industry. It will keep $13.6 billion in America that would otherwise be spent on foreign oil.

This total impact of biodiesel on the economy includes the temporary impacts of construction, the permanent impacts of annual production and the direct value of biodiesel and co-products (glycerin).

Green Jobs for the EconomyThe U.S. biodiesel industry is a new green industry that supports more than 21,000 jobs. It added $4 billion to the national economy in 2007 and is expected reach 200,000 by the year 2015 with $50 billion added to the national economy. Biodiesel is a good bargain for taxpayers, because the tax revenues for the industry exceed the cost of incentives for the fuel. Biodiesel production also helps the American farmer by creating additional markets, helping often the strugglingfamily farmer and rural communities.

Consider that 54 countries are poorer today than they were 15 years ago. And that almost half of the world’s people – the vast majority of them working people – live on less than two dollars per day.
