Principle Graphics Create Branded Wayfinding for Blackpool Central Library Keen to help the public navigate their way easily around the newly refurbished Blackpool Central Library, Principle Graphics in partnership with London-based architects Bisset Adams produced a branded wayfinding solution inside and out. The year-long project saw a £3 million investment from the Big Lottery Fund and Blackpool Council. Originally funded by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library celebrated its centenary in October 2011. Now that it was time for the iconic building to enjoy a makeover around 4,000 members of the public were consulted about what the community wanted the revamp to achieve. The resulting project included a renovation of the Grade II-listed building and a new extension housing a café and three new rooms for community use. Principle Graphics was approached by Bisset Adams to produce, project manage and implement a comprehensive wayfinding and graphics scheme which sympathetically blended the new branding with the heritage and history of this important community building. The brief included internal and external signage and wayfinding systems, environmental graphics, gondola inserts, built-up lettering and café graphics. Principle completed the project speedily and efficiently, taking just two months from initial tender to final completion. This included extensive prototyping to ensure that the specification was exactly in line with the architects’ and client’s requirements. The outcome was a big success and the opening of the revitalised library in October was met with outstanding feedback from guests, staff and the general public. The Head of Blackpool Libraries, Anne Ellis, was thrilled with the whole project. "We wanted to make it bright and airy and we have achieved that. I’m delighted with the results!" she said.

Rachael Simcox from Bisset Adams also commented, "We worked closely with Principle to design a signage system and environmental graphics to reflect the new library brand. Principle prototyped, manufactured and installed the designs on time, within budget and with good attention to detail. We are extremely happy with the results, which work well within this traditional building. It was great working with Claire and her team."
