Activity level up from previous years • 26% increase in logging volume in

2011 from 2010 Issues management remains low

2011 Program Activity

Harvest volume - 4.9 million m3

Harvest area - 10,335 ha

Road construction - 379 km

Restocked – 8020 ha

Regenerated - 7050 ha

Finances Council continues to be able operate within its annual budget

• Operating surplus projected for the year ended March 2012

Received a clean financial audit for fiscal year 2010/11

Budget for fiscal year 2012/13 = $425,800 (+ $100,000 contingency reserve)

• decrease from 2011/12

• mill rate decreased to $0.40/$1000blv

Effectiveness Audit 2012 Objective: Determine whether the environmental objectives in the Private Managed Forest Land Act are being achieved.

Soil conservation – protect soil productivity by minimizing the area occupied by roads, landings & trails

Water quality – protect human drinking water

Fish habitat – retain sufficient streamside trees & understory vegetation to protect habitat conditions

Critical wildlife habitat – to facilitate the long-term protection of that habitat

Reforestation – regenerate areas with healthy & commercially valuable stand of trees

Effectiveness Audit 2012 (con’t) Council introduced regulations in 2004, revised in 2007,

respecting forest stewardship activities These established practices and results that to meet

government’s objectives in the PMFL Act This audit intends to verify whether the regulatory regime

meets the intended environmental outcomes Audit Sample based on MFs that reported harvesting

activities in 2007/2008 Includes a balance of properties area both smaller & greater

than 1000 hectares 13 MFs selected: 8 coastal & 5 in interior

Inspection Program

Objective: Inspect all MFs at least once every 5 years

2011 Program: 48 MFs inspected: 35 on Coast; 13 in Interior

Assessed performance re management commitments & legislation

Overall positive result – strong commitments

Forestry extension opportunity as well

2012 Program: Targeting 27 MFs
