  • Why use SMART Goals

In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.

    - Robert Heinlein

In life, as in football, you won't go far unless you know where the goalposts are.

    - Arnold H. Glasgow

A goal without a plan is just a wish. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

  • SMART - Specific Great Goals are well defined and specific

    Straightforward

Emphasizes an action and a required outcome

Use the who what, why, how, and when

Most commonly used are numbers, ratios, % and

    frequency

  • SMART - Measureable Enables us to track the results of the goal

Helps us know when we have achieved our goal

Melissa Behrend HR On Call www.hroncall.com.au

  • SMART Achievable / Attainable Consider factors which determine the

    outcome and its success

Needs to be a stretch, whilst maintaining motivation

Melissa Behrend HR On Call www.hroncall.com.au

  • SMART Realistic / Relevant

Objectives may be achievable but not realistic

Do you have the resources to achieve this goal

There is no point including a sales volume goal for a department who has no direct influence on the sales volume.

Melissa Behrend HR On Call www.hroncall.com.au

  • SMART - Timely Clear distinct timeframes Deadlines for achieving the goal This creates focus and priority

Theres a difference between interest and commitment. When youre interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When youre committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results. Unknown

  • Are your goals SMART?

    Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timely

What are we going to do?Is it well understood?Does it have an action verb?Is it clear what needs to happen? Will it lead to the desired result?

How will I know the change has occurred? Can the measurement be obtained?

Can it be done in the timeframe? Are there any limitations or constraints? Is this possible ?

Do I have the resources available ?Do I need to revisit my priorities?

    Is this possible?

When will this goal be accomplished? Is there are stated deadline?
