Dear reader For workers in manufacturing, emergency responders in action, police officers and soldiers ensuring safety for us all, the proper personal protective equipment is crucial for doing their job, maintaining health, or even surviving a deadly threat. And whether it is cut-resistant gloves, heat- and flame-retardant garments or bullet-proof vests, Twaron makes protection possible. Safety and Protection (S&P) has grown to a good 30% of Teijin Aramids business. Looking ahead, the demand in the protective apparel market for products that meet increasingly higher safety standards without compromising on comfort and weight looks set to continue. Creating such equipment requires the continuous improvement of Twaron, but also the introduction of Teijins new-generation, meta-aramid fiber with the highest level of heat resistance. Committed to serving the S&P market for the long term, Teijin is therefore investing in a new facility in Thailand, which will be operational in 2015. The safety and security of law enforcement and military professionals is something that should never be compromised on, and it is our ongoing mission to develop solutions for the S&P market that offer better performance. We are always eager to cooperate with our customers in developments to create synergies in the S&P value chain. A great example is our customer Armor Express and their Quantum bullet-proof vest. You can read the impressive story of police officer Lt. Brian Murphy, who survived a horrible shooting thanks to wearing the Quantum vest. Such stories really show our added value and contribution to saving lives: it is what motivates me and all our employees, and makes us passionate for Twaron. Meanwhile, our new Twaron Unidirectional Laminate UD22, which we will be introducing at the Milipol fair in Paris, is the latest example of our solutions that enable enhanced protection at an excellent price/ performance ratio you can read more about it on page 7. Wed be happy to give you more detailed information about how Twaron UD22 can be used either alone or in combination with other Twaron materials to create easy-to-handle products. Feel free to contact your Teijin Aramid representative for more information. Happy reading,Christoph Hahn Director Marketing & Sales, Teijin Aramid03 4. Collaborating to crea 100% Teijin Aramid fab When it comes to personal protective equipment, there are few sectors that demand more in terms of ultimate protection and durability than firefighting. The development of high-performance fibers has enabled great improvements in firefighting gear over the years. And as the Dutch-based Weststrate Group knows from experience, fabrics containing new and different combinations of Teijins aramids can make that gear perform even better. The Weststrate Group, headquartered in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, has yearsUnique collaborationof experience in the development and production of personal protectiveUsually, we just have contact with our fabric supplier, says Operationalequipment, which is distributed worldwide via their extensive dealer network.Manager Christian Weststrate. A new leap forward in the balancing act Providing people with the best possible personal protection in hazardous situations has always required a complicated balancing act between protection levels, weight, comfort and costs. In our ongoing dedication to minimizing these trade-offs, Teijin Aramid recently made another leap forward with the launch of Twaron Ultra Micro the worlds first ultra-microfilament fiber. Law-enforcement and military professionals have to carry a higher-than-averageon the market today. A key potential application for this fiber is fabricsweight load of clothing, protective gear, weapons and other equipment.for anti-ballistic vests. Better protection at lower cost in a variety of ways With defense and law enforcement budgets getting smaller, the industry is looking for ways to provide the same ballistic protection to their professionals at lower costs. Other new and recently launched innovations are making it possible to reduce the price/performance trade-off, or to provide products that perform better for longer.Twaron UD22 cost-effective soft ballistics Modern police and security forces are looking for soft ballistic vests that fulfill a range of requirements. These vests need to offer low weight, high comfort and excellent protection against bullets. They also need to provide options for hybrid solutions combining bullet and stab protection. Above all, they need to meet the latest international standards while remaining cost effective. Solutions based on Twaron Unidirection Laminate UD22 or those combining Twaron UD22 with other Twaron materials are easy to handle and provide an excellent price/performance ratio. The unidirectional (UD) laminate consists of two plies of Twaron yarn in a 0/90 configuration. Each layer is individually constructed within a resin matrix, and thermoplastic film is laminated to the top and bottom of the plies to ensure maximum abrasion resistance. Twaron UD22 has been subjected to a range of stress and performance tests that demonstrate its long-term durability and effectiveness, and is the ideal solution for any new vest that needs to meet the NIJ IIIA-level standards.Twaron PVB prepreg a protective solution for helmets and plates Today, producers of protective equipment need cost-effective, high-performanceTwaron T765 An up to 20% less expensive ground-vehicle solutionmaterials that can be quickly shipped, safely stored and deployed under a range ofGround vehicles not only shield occupants from externalconditions. In short New developments in the world of aramidThe Toughest Firefighter Alive Joachim Posanz, winner of last years World Firefighter Games (and who is therefore the Toughest Firefighter Alive,) just finished a new challenge: competing in the Firefighter Combat Challenge in Las Vegas, together with colleague Alexander Meyer. During this grueling event, competitors race head to head wearing full bunker gear and heavy breathing apparatus. They simulate the extreme physical demands of real-life firefighting, including climbing a 5-story tower, hoisting and deploying cumbersome hoses, and rescuing a life-sized, 175lb dummy. Joachim wears a Twaron-based protective suit, both during the competition and every day when hes on the job. My work is physically very demanding, says Joachim. The lightweight PBI matrix suit based on Twaron gives me the extra comfort and flexibility that allows me to move freely, and to act and react more precisely in critical situations. Together with my own training efforts, it enables me to be those important few seconds quicker than my competitors. Joachim finished a commendable fourth in the competition, and both he and Alexander Meyer are now member of the Club of the Fastest Firefighters: they both received the LIONS DEN award for finishing the course in less than 100 seconds.08 Aramid Vision November 2013 9. Twaron underwear saves lives Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are often at risk of being injured by buried roadside bombs. As they explode, these bombs launch sand and debris into the air. These particles may be small, but they are propelled upwards with great force, and frequently cause significant injuries to soldiers pelvic regions, femoral arteries and femoral nerves. To better protect against this risk, the US army is also developing ballistic underwear, with Teijin Aramid supplying several types of Twaron. Plus, preventing sand and small fragments from entering open wounds greatly reduces the risk of infection, and improves soldiers chances of making full recoveries. As a result, the US army is developing small-fragment ballistics protection for the elbows, forearms, thighs, and calves of its next-generation combat uniform.Award winning innovation creates sensation in yachting industry Specifically for the yachting industry, Cousin Trestec have developed an award-winning textile clutch, named the Constrictor. Unlike conventional clutches, which squeeze the rope between two metal surfaces, the Constrictor is a textile sock that sheaths the loaded rope. It is woven so cleverly that it allows the rope to run freely in one direction, but grips the rope instantly when it changes direction. This constrictor effect, patented by Cousin Trestec, therefore increases holding power as the load increases something that gives extra safety and security in the challenging conditions that these ropes and cables are often used in. The Constrictor system has received several awards and created a sensation in the yachting industry.09 10. Twaron saved my lifeOne normal Sunday morning last year, Lt Brian Murphy arrived at the local Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin (USA), to investigate a reported shooting. He encountered Wade Michael Page, who had already killed six people and wounded three others. Within three minutes, Lt Murphy had exchanged shots with Page and been hit by 15 bullets. However, with a ballistics vest protecting his torso, he survived and made a remarkable recovery. 10 Aramid Vision November 2013 11. 11 12. Brian MurphyStill helping others Brian Murphy now runs an initiative called the Save Program, funded by Armor Express, which helps officers injured while wearing a vest. He has also remained in close contact with the Sikh community. We have friends now among the congregation and go regularly to the temple to see whos there and to say hello. They forgave the shooter the very next day they never cease to amaze me. Brian Murphys story and the man himself are pretty amazing, too. nI wore that vest every time I went on patrol or on a call. And on that day, it saved my life.in the face, bounced off my spine and came out through my larynx. Brian speaks slowly, but in a way that makes you think he has always weighed his words carefully. It took only three minutes the FBI timed it but it seemed to take forever. At one point, I remember thinking: When are you going to be done? He was only 2-3 meters away, and kept shooting. When I at last heard a rifle shot, I knew that my fellow officers had arrived. I knew that my role was over. Brian took 15 bullets in total. He was hit in both arms, both hands, both legs and in his face and head. Three bullets hit his ballistics vest. Of these, one would have hit his heart, one his kidneys, and one was heading for his head when it hit the vest and ricocheted. Although this bullet eventually penetrated his skull, it had been slowed sufficiently by the vest to prevent it from causing fatal damage.12 Aramid Vision November 2013Close up of Lt Murphys vest 13. Teijin is currently supplying samples to selected customers for applications such as protective clothing and sheet materials. These are expected to be used in high radiation-level situations, such as in the medical field, radiation testing, and reconstruction activities in disaster-hit northeastern Japan.15 16. Twaron Ultra Micro Lightening the load Security and military professionals often carry a very heavy load of protective gear, weapons and other equipment up to 60kg (132lbs) for combat troops. Every bit of weight they can be relieved of reduces long-term stress on joints and backs. It also increases physical mobility, which is incredibly important in high-risk and crisis situations. Twaron Ultra Micro, the worlds first ultra-microfilament p-aramid fiber, is thinner yet provides more ballistic stopping power than any other p-aramid yarn on the market today. This makes it possible to achieve up to 20% weight reduction in vests at the same performance level. Never before has strength been so lightweight.
