Things to Consider Before Buying Your First Ukulele
Ukulele is an amazing instrument that you can learn as a hobby. It is becoming quite popular nowadays
with more people switching from guitars to play ukuleles. There are a number of things that you need to
consider before purchasing a ukulele. Search online to find high quality ukuleles for sale.
You may find buying your first ukulele quite a daunting task and experience. The size is an important
aspect that should be considered before purchasing a ukulele. Smaller sizes are usually ideal for
children or strumming as these have higher tones. Larger sizes are quite suitable for complex chord
playing and finger picking as these produce louder sounds in comparison to smaller counterparts.
Cost is another thing which is equally important to the size. Buying a low quality ukulele may cause you
to stop playing the instrument as it will fail to live up to your expectations. Following are few tips which
can help you to buy your first ukulele:
The Family of Ukulele:
Ukuleles are available in four sizes; the soprano is the smallest (about 21 inches long in total), the
concert (23 inches), the tenor (26 inches) and the baritone (30 inches). Ukulele banjo is considered as
the fifth type of Ukulele.
The Soprano has 12 to 14 frets and is usually considered as the standard size for the instrument. Though
it’s the smallest in size, still has the highest pitch. The majority of people tend to go for soprano as it is
highly suited for chord playing and strumming at the start of the training. Easy to carry, store and a
perfect choice for the children as its smaller size make it easier to hold.
The Concert has a larger fingerboard and produces a much bigger sound as it have more than 13 to 16
frets. The Concert retains that classic ukulele sound and is an excellent choice when you are confused to
choose between the soprano and the tenor. It is an ideal choice for people with bigger hands as its
larger size provides an extra space to play the chords.
The tenor has 17 to 19 frets and it is the largest traditional ukulele. Due to its large size the sound
produced is fuller and louder. With its large neck, a musician can easily play different chords and solos. It
is vastly used by professional and famous musicians, making tenor quite popular among amateur players
and beginners. Even a number of guitarists prefer to play the tenor ukulele.
The largest ukulele is the Baritone has a fuller sound and is almost the size of a guitar. These have more
than 20 frets and are tuned similar to the top four strings of a guitar. These are a preferable choice of
musicians who plan switching to guitar or with former guitar players.
What amount you should for the instrument?
