Curtains can add visual interest to your space and they can be used to update the look of

your rooms without spending a lot. Before purchasing curtains, here are a few things to

consider.

Think about the room – When choosing a curtain, it is important to consider where it

will be placed. If you are buying a set for your living room, choose one that looks

welcoming and cheerful. They should allow enough light to stream in through the

windows. For the bedroom, choose a curtain that helps create an ambiance that is

conducive for sleeping and relaxing. Although you want to be able to darken the room to

help you fall asleep, avoid buying curtains with

dark colors as this can make the room seem

smaller. Go for a thicker curtain fabric instead

that will block much of the light from the

outdoors. For kids’ rooms, bright and cheerful

curtains work best. For the kitchen, floor

length drapes are impractical. You can use

either café curtains or blinds. Blinds are often a

better choice because they are much easier to clean and will not stain if someone drops or

spills anything on them accidentally. Blinds will also not absorb the smells of food and they

are less likely to catch fire.

Determine the purpose – Although curtains can have a huge impact on the

appearance of your space, they are also functional. They can help block light, provide

insulation, and prevent draft. Different fabrics are available. If you want to have some

privacy or block out as much light, you can buy a heavier curtain, like those that use

upholstery fabric. You can find sellers of upholstery fabric in the UK here. A sheer curtain

is best if the space needs more sunlight and better ventilation.

Lining or no lining – Adding lining to your curtain will help add volume and weight

to the window treatment. With lining, even a discount curtain fabric will seem fuller and

richer. More than the appearance, lining a curtain will help them lower energy costs

because they will keep the room cool during summer and chase the cold away during the

winter.

Color and patterns – When it comes to color, you can choose a curtain that blends

with the color of your walls or a contrasting color. If you do choose the former, make sure

to choose a curtain that is two shades darker. In regard to patterns, the rule of thumb is to

choose one that will visually balance the space. For instance, choose a solid color curtain if

you have a patterned bedding or furniture.
