Successfully

If you love working with wood then you can easily use your skills to

make a profit. You need to know that starting a home woodworking

business is a simple thing that will need you to use the simplest ideas

to see you grow. Starting small has always been the key in many

businesses and this is not limited to the woodworking business. Here

are some tips to get you started.

1. Make sure you start small- Starting small is always beneficial.

Remember that when you are starting a business, you will have

fewer customers and it is your marketing and the type of products

you produce that will at last determine if you will get enough

customers or not. Starting small encompasses a lot of things. For

instance, you need to start your business from your own home. You

can work from your garage.

In addition, you will need to indulge in the simple projects that do

not demand a lot of space and money. Simple project like the toy

project will need minimal working space and at the same time, you

can use the available hand tools to finish your project.

2. Cut out your niche- Note that woodworking is a very broad subject

that will have many projects. You need to have a niche. Let people

know that you are good at the production of particular things. This is

a great remedy to help you make a name. As time goes on and the

business expands, you will be in a better position to include other

projects as you employ other specialized woodworkers.

3. Advertise- The success story that surround many businesses that

make a great name out there all comes back to the marketing bit.

You need to advertise your business even when it is still a home

woodworking business. Make sure that you let people know that you

make wood projects. A good idea that you can use to advertise

locally is to set up posters. You can also advertise on the local daily.

However, the best media that is widely used by many people is the

internet. You need to set up your own website that shows all the

sample products that you have to offer. You can also simply use the

word of mouth. Let your friends know that you do sell the

woodworks and they will let other people know of the same.

Finally, always make sure you produce great quality woodwork that

is durable and beautiful. The demand for hand crated wood projects

is high and thus you need to make the best out of it.

2. What It Takes to Start a Woodworking Business

Is woodworking a hobby of yours?

If so, great! Maybe you can take it up a notch and turn it into a full-

blown business. If not, you could still turn it into a nice financial

supplement even if it won't be your main thing. In any case, I've got

some great news. Hand crafted wooden items are quite appreciated

worldwide and that means they also sell at higher prices. The

woodworking market is definitely an opportunity for many.

Out of ideas what to make?

No worries. If you're new, start slowly, but most importantly, take it

easy on yourself and don't attempt to create stuff that's obviously

too difficult for you. I'd focus on getting some experience first.

Alright, let's get this thing rolling.

What does one need to start a woodworking business?

First of all, sort out the legal stuff in your home country. Every state

has some local requirements, so be sure to check up on that. Then,

when you've got that settled, you need to get an idea what exactly

you will be making. Tables, toys, furniture? It all requires experience.

But maybe even more so, the appropriate set of tools! It's advised to

join a trade organization if your local area has one. That way you can

advertise your business better and get some important contacts.

Don't forget that you can't make stuff out of thin air. Put in other

words: you will need some wood, and different types of it. Do not

give into temptation and buy cheap wood... it's important that your

items last long, or you're going to be losing customers quickly.

Will I need to devise a marketing plan to sell my merchandise?

Absolutely yes. Definitely think about setting up a website, this is

becoming increasingly more important nowadays. Think of it as a

fantastic opportunity to showcase your work. Your clients can also

refer their friends to your website if they are happy with their

purchase.

When your website is up and running, try to attend some trade

shows and flea markets or anything like that. You will get some

experience and meet people who might turn into your future

customers. You can also try advertising your business via local

bulletin boards and magazines. Be creative.

Does woodworking have any artistic traits!

Yes, if you want it to. You can become a sculptor, for example. Or

make wooden frames for photographs and paintings. Maybe make

small wooden figurines and toys. It's up to you.

Woodworking is a lucrative and creative business, so make sure to

always seek out people to learn from and take advantage of your

business opportunities.

3. How to Advertise Your Woodworking Business

With Flyers

If you plan on starting a woodworking business or are already

running one, one of the best and cheapest form of advertising your

business is through fliers. Before you start producing your flyers you

have to design your flyer, find a company that will print your flyers

cheaply, and then figure out a way to distribute.

Your first step is to design the perfect flyer for your woodworking

business. You should keep all wording professional and error free.

Another important step is to include pictures of your actual work so

that potential customers can gauge the level of quality they can

expect. Try to arrange everything neatly and professionally. If you

don't think you can handle this step you can hire a graphics designers

to do it for you. You can easily have a flyer designed for $10-$50.

Potential customers will be detracted if your flyers sports a cheaply

made and unattractive design.

Once you've designed a flyer it's time to find a company that will

print your flyers cheaply. There are hundreds of companies you can

find online that will print flyers, but there are a few things you need

to look at before choosing a supplier. You need to look at the prices,

including bulk pricing, the quality, and shipping time (if you really

need your flyers. Make sure you check the shipping prices as well

because some suppliers lower there flyer cost but raise the price of

shipping. You should be able to purchase 1,000 flyers for anywhere

from $60-$100. Most supplier give discounts for bulk orders, so if

you think you could use a few extra flyer you should probably order

them.

Now that you've designed and had your flyers produced, you need to

distribute them. The most cost effective way is to deliver them

yourself but this might not be an option for you. One option is to call

your local newspaper and ask them to include your flyer inside the

newspaper. This probably won't be free, but it shouldn't be to

expensive as long as the newspaper is small. Another way is to ask

store/restaurant/school/organization owner's if they would allow

you to leave flyers on tables or in a special leaflet section.

Once you've designed, printed, and distributed your flyers you

should start seeing business rolling in. If you're not getting calls you

might want to try a new design or distributing the flyers to different

households and organizations. If you still aren't getting business it's

time to try a new advertising method.

5. The One-Person Woodworking Business

he Dream - Many woodworkers dream of making a living using their

skills. From the outside looking in, it seems an enjoyable livelihood

and it certainly can be. It's a worthwhile goal for anyone who really

loves woodworking. After all, what could be better than making your

living doing something you really love.

After spending more than twenty years making my living with

woodworking, I would never discourage anyone from trying it but I

would definitely caution them to have a true picture before jumping

in. If you really know what is involved you will either change your

mind or be prepared for any difficulties.

Making A Living - First, realize that what you will probably be doing, if

things work well, is making a living. If your taste run to living in

luxury, it's unlikely to happen with the output of one woodworker.

There are very few woodworkers who are getting wealthy from this

work. These are the few who have become famous and make much

more from their books, magazine articles, product endorsements

and TV appearances than from woodworking. A few of these sell

their woodwork projects for enormous sums because of their fame.

Unless you become famous, you will have to sell and produce a lot of

woodwork to make a good living.

Your Own Space - If you are fortunate enough to work from your

garage or a shop space that you own, your costs will be much lower.

If you must rent a space, as I did, then your monthly expenses will

include additional rent, electricity, phone, garbage pickup, security,

etc. It all adds up and means that you must produce a minimum

amount of work each month just to pay those bills and of course,

your personal bills.

Constant Marketing - The romance of woodworking must be

balanced with the constant marketing necessary to keep the work

coming in. In time, word of mouth brings in lots of work if you

develop a good reputation. Until then, you must get the word out

consistently. Once the work comes in you must have good

production methods so you can complete the projects promptly and

keep the money flowing. If projects take too long and the money

flow stops, it can become difficult to pay the bills. Speaking of money

flow, you must develop and adhere to consistent collection methods.

This is one area where many woodworkers fail. The payment for the

work must be as important as the work itself. If you are lax in

collecting, you will run into customers who fail to pay you and this

will cause serious cash flow problems.

The Business - Even though you love woodworking, you must do the

business if you are to make a living at it. Success requires an in-depth

knowledge of both woodworking and business management. If you

don't have both, I suggest you hesitate to jump in until you have

honed your business skills.

Looking back I realize that my lack of knowledge during my startup

many years ago could have been offset with some basic information

and someone to advise me.Unfortunately I had to learn most things

by trial and error.
