Replacing pipes are important renovation projects to be considered in

homes. Some situations may trigger pipeline renewal and these are the

following:

Age

A house of more than 60 years old is sure to have a deteriorating pipe

system. Owners should hire plumbers to check for exposed pipes in the

basement, utility rooms and crawl spaces. With age come tubing

discoloration, dimpling, stains, pimples and flaking. These are all signs of

corrosion.

Leaks

Leaks are a sure sign of pipe

deterioration. Clays and sealants are

quick solutions for small leaks.

Unfortunately, some are just a

symptom of bigger malfunction. If the

leaks are becoming more constant, it

is best to have a pipe wholly

replaced.

Floods

After the flood, pipes may be worn out,

especially the underground parts. Many

owners are having problems after

floodwater receded. Pipes corrode and dirt

may penetrate ill-fit tubing. Pipe

deterioration may affect the water source in

which case owners should replace the pipes

immediately.

Renovation

During a major renovation, owners should take the opportunity to

replace pipes. Installation of heaters or purifiers in the pipe system

also calls for renewal.

Lifespan

Different pipe materials have different life span, in general, steel ones last

longer, but are prone to corrosion and are generally more expensive. This

may prevent owners from replacing the whole pipe system and resort to

minimal repairs instead. Once the lifespan is maximised, owners may choose

to replace the pipes to prevent future problems.

Supply pipes

Supply pipelines suffer from constant pressure. These are the narrower

pipes connected to faucets and heaters. The typical lifespan of brass and

galvanised steel pipes are 80 to 100 years, while copper can last up to 70 to

80 years.

Drain lines

Waste pipes are wider and allow natural flushing and gravity for wastewater

flow. Cast iron can last 80-100 years while Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes

last for 25 to 40 years with proper maintenance.

Pipes need maintenance and replacement. New pipes will offer peace of

mind and reduce the risk of troubles in the future.
