“Library and information science is an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary field that applies the practices, perspectives, and tools of management, information technology, education, and other areas to libraries; the collection, organization, preservation, and dissemination of information resources.”

The first American school for library science was founded by Melvil Dewey at Columbia University in 1887.

Owing to the initiative taken by Sayaji Rao Gaekwad II, the ruler of the erstwhile Baroda State W.A Borden a disciple of Dewey initiated training in librarianship in India in 1911 at Baroda.

After partition, the first school of Library Science was opened in University of Madras in the year 1929 in collaboration with the Madras Library Association.
