2. WHAT DOES A DEBT COLLECTOR DO? Debt collectors help companies get paid. Their job is to track down people who owe money from overdue bills and negotiate payment. Usually, this is done over the phone or by mail. If that person is no longer at that address or phone number, they may try to track them down using the web, post office or other means. Once contacted, debt collectors remind people of their overdue bills and do their best to negotiate payment. This may mean negotiating a payment plan, or in extreme situations, legal action. Debt collectors keep track of the debtors to make sure that they are repaying what is owed. 3. DEBT COLLECTOR JOB TASK The debt collector performs the following tasks on a regular basis: Updating records of debtorsTracking down debtorsContacting debtors by telephone or letterListening carefully to the situations and issues related to debtorsNegotiating payment plansPerforming administrative dutiesPreparing debtor statements 4. JOBS SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS Listening: When speaking to a debtor, it is important to listen towhy they are in debt. This will help the debt collector determine a solution. Negotiation: Working with debtors to start some sort of paymentplan, or outright repayment of a debt requires good negotiation skills. Speaking: Debt collectors spend most of their time on the phonetalking with debtors. Being a good speaker is useful. Persistence: Some debtors do not want to be found, or may not beresponsive when called by a debt collector. Successful debt collectors do not take no for an answer. 5. Debt Collector Attire Debt collectors can wear either business or casual attire. 6. WORK ENVIRONMENTS Debt collectors often work for third-party collection agencies such as: Credit card Mortgage company Health care office Utility company Home, Etc. 7. Working Conditions Working as a debt collector can be stressful because many of the debtors might be struggling financially, which can take a toll on the debt collectors. Aggressive debtors can insult the debt collector, which can put the debt collector in stressful situations and under pressure. 9. WHAT DEBT COLLECTORS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO Cannot contact the debtor before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., unless they asked them to Cannot contact the debtor at work once they told them not to Use threats of violence or harm Use obscene or profane language Repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone Falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives Falsely claim that the debtor committed a crime Falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company Deposit a post-dated check early Use a false company name 10. DEBT COLLECTOR DEGREES While its possible to work as debt collector without a college degree, employers generally prefer to hire candidates with a college degree. The following path of study could lead to a successful job as a debt collector after high school graduation: Associate degree in communication, customer service, finance or computer applications Bachelor degree in communications, customer service or finance 14. Even though a debt collector is not my choice of a career, others might consider if you can handle being under pressure and stressful situations. My plans are to graduate from Tennessee College of Applied Technology and earn my degree in a Medical Administrative Assistant. After my children are up in age, I will probably go back to school for something else that might interests me later in the future.
