What are some immediate editing techniques they use and why?

One of the techniques used is over the shoulder shots because it frames the image of whatever (or whomever) the camera is pointing towards.

Another technique is establishings shot, this shot is mostly used to introduce the setting or characters in a slow pace and soft music.

Page 4: Editing in trailer

How does the pace change and why? • The pace at the beginning is slow because its just introducing the setting and

characters to the audience but when it gets nearer to the middle the pace increases and causes more tension at the most important scenes.

• For example: MAMA

• However in the another supernatural trailer it is slightly different such as the “ Evil Dead “ because the trailer begins with a slow pace but then it has a quick pace footage in between.• This is because they want to show the exciting part to the audience too and show what the character is describing.

What editing techniques are used in different genres and why? (What editing techniques are conventional to

specific genres)

• In supernatural horror films the music is very deep and dramatic. Also incidental music is put in the scenes which have the most tension and gets louder.

• In drama films have much lower volume and slow pace to fit the romantic flow.

Music?

•In supernatural horror films the effects are much darker and mysterious to fit the conventions.•Also in supernatural horror films they have effects such as thunder this adds isolation to the scene as people associate these types of weather with negativity.•In romantic comedies the lighting and effects are always bright as love is associated with happiness.

Effects?

How does the editing connect/compliment the plot and narrative structure?

• In Carrie, the end of the trailer has a very fast pace adn theresfore this quick pace creates the enigma of what happens in those scenes as they dont show much but when they do you have barely see it because its so short.

•Also another editing is incidental music, this is included in trailers however they dont show what really happens when the incidental music stops. They keep this restricted because this will influence them to watch the film.

Mama= the closer she gets to the wardrobe the lower the incidental music gets. But we dont see whats inside.

What editing techniques do you find inspirational? (What editing techniques would you like to use in your coursework and why)

• I found this pov shot inspirational because it fully shows the character and he’s still because he’s on the floor. Sometimes when the characters move too much then it can confuses the audience.

• This shot reverse shot was inspirational because it’s followed by a reverse shot of the character looking back at them.
