Ideology Essay Q is a music magazine that is sold every month within the United Kingdom. Q targets the older generation, as they believe all the old bands/artists are being ignored and the new bands/artists are getting all the attention. Q wants to show the iconic artists, who have an iconic history rather than your typical singer whose history in music is very small. Their ideology is to show every beautiful aspect of music to all generations, old or young. They normally show well known artists, rather than new artists as their target is not the younger but the older generation who will want the older artist(s). Another ideology of Q is to present quality articles of the highest standard, they don’t want to produce anything less than 100% because they believe their readers deserve the best. Another ideology of Q is being different, and unique is good; Q don’t like to follow the rules but push boundaries. The article easily corresponds with the magazines ideology. Ideology Essay

Q is a music magazine that is sold every month within the United Kingdom. Q targets the older generation, as they believe all the old bands/artists are being ignored and the new bands/artists are getting all the attention. Q wants to

show the iconic artists, who have an iconic history rather than your typical singer whose history in music is very small. There are many examples, and one of them comes within the first paragraph: “thrilling, audacious and unexpected moments of pop theatre”. This is describing Lady Gaga as an incredible artist, who can create an emphatic show at ease. This corresponds with the ideology most evidently, Q believes in showing iconic artists and these 3 verbs imply Lady Gaga being iconic. Q is describing her performance at the royal variety as a phenomenon, even more so since the royal variety is a massive deal due to the Queen being in attendance. The article is trying to get across that Lady Gaga is a tremendous singer, who can influence an event to the magnitude of the Royal Variety. Furthermore the language used by Q shows the values of the magazine. The use of language is Standard English, with an amalgam of complex words. This proves Q are targeting an older generation, as they using formal English to attract their audience of the older generation. They have these values of mostly targeting the older generation, because the music they present is mature music not young and up and coming music which would interest a young generation. Also Q has an ideology of showing iconic artists, and as Q is evidently portraying Lady Gaga as an icon through the various terms this is one way in which the article corresponds to Q ideology. Furthermore they care in producing a

quality written story, they don’t produce and post any rubbish but every word, and every sentence that gets put in Q is top quality. An example of Q doing this would be the 3 verbs mentioned above “Thrilling, Audacious and Unexpected”, Q try to produce quality written articles which features a range of words which the older generation they target will understand. Q has values of being successful, as no major magazine wants to be worst at what they do. These values are most likely gained from society, as people put pressure on others to be successful and this is a value Q have within their company.

Another example of Q is in the final section of the column, where they use various personalities to describe Lady Gaga. The image (right) suggests Lady Gaga is more than a figure, a role model for all genres and sectors. It says that she’s been shot by David LaChapelle whose considered to be one of the greatest and unorthodox photographers around due to his wacky and unique photo shoots he would do. On the right you can see a photo shoot of Lady Gaga produced by David LaChapelle, this proves David’s uniqueness as he breaks boundaries to create a photo shoot. This communicates to us readers that Lady Gaga has a unique personality, as she’s willing to undertake new and different shoots to portray her odd personality. The value this article connotes is style and fashion. In western society, fashion means a lot and Lady Gaga displays a lot of style thorough the way she dresses and sings. As we live in capitalist society freedom of speech is very important, and the way Lady Gaga dresses expresses her way of views and thoughts. This links into Q ideology of being different and being different is good. Throughout the article, it’s says that Lady Gaga enjoys being unique and different and this is shown through her unique expressions such as a David La Chappell photo shoot. The whole article more or less is a about fashion and her current situation. Within this paragraph (right) it gives us readers a lot of information about the values of Q. A lot of sexual language is used within the article; this gives us an insight to the beliefs of Q that they allow such information. As this type of language wouldn’t be suitable for the minds of young one, so this proves the target audience is aimed at the older generation. Going back to my previous point, the language is awfully provocative and this links into Q’s values. Within Western Society, sex is more casual then in other areas where sex outside marriage is seen as bad a slaughtering

another human being. This tells us that Q values and beliefs about Western Society are very relaxed, due to the way they speak about it. This also

relates to fashion, as Gaga mentions that she wants to wear a “d*** strapped to my v*****”.

This shows the extreme length that Lady Gaga will go to expresses he personality, that’s she willing to go the extra length to express her unorthodox personality. This relates back to Q’s ideology that they enjoy people who push boundaries to be different, not stay the same to please every other person.
