LIBRARIES AND APPLE PIE “A university is just a group of buildings around a

library.” - Shelby Foote

“The Library is the Heart of the University.” - Charles W. Eliot

“A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.” - Henry Ward Beecher

“‘Money makes the mare go’ is a proverb that I heard my mother say on many occasions…money may indeed make the mare go, and I contend that it takes a great library to make the university go.” – Library Dean Mollie Dinwiddie, InfoOne Newsletter, Fall 2008.

LIBRARIES AND ACCREDITATION

“Unless libraries are used and valued by students and faculty, their impact on learning is small. In short, a library—or a learning resource center—exists to support learning and teaching. To make learning resources an integral part of a student’s education, an organization will have to invest in appropriate materials and equipment and provide the staff that can maintain these resources, train students in their use, and provide assistance when it is needed.

– Criterion 3, Core Component 3d, Accreditation Handbook, The Higher Learning Commission (accrediting agency for UCM)
