A mentor gave me this advice: Act as the host of the event. At the next event I greeted everyone and then introduced the people that I had met to others. I acted as if it was my role to make everyone comfortable. It worked and I enjoyed the one-on-one conversations!

Touch base with people you know are attending a networking event in advance, and ask them to introduce you to a few other people. The same concept applies to online networking. Ask friends and colleagues to think of a few folks they think you should meet, and ask them to facilitate an introduction.

Do not dress in an understated manner. People won't see you. You want to attract people to you so you don't have to go out and "pounce.” Wear red. It attracts people, and when people come to you, it eliminates stress.  Sandy Dumont
