She is the founder of Shahira Fahmy Architects SFA, an architecture and urbanism practice established in Cairo, Egypt (2005) with focus on the business and intelligence of developing cities. Fahmy has built projects in the Middle East, London, and Europe, and has been hailed by Phaidon as one of the “Architects building the Arab future” (2011). Fahmy’s work has been published in the Financial Times, the Architectural Record, the Architectural Review, the New York times T magazines, Frame, and Wallpaper, among others. Her most recent projects include: the restoration and recreation of an experimental arts hall, the Wooster Group, a theatre company rooted in Soho since the 70’s, New York (2015); the expansion of the Delfina foundation in London, to be the largest provider of international residencies in the city, promoting and forging artistic collaborations (2014); the master plan of ‘Andermatt Swiss Alps’ project phase III, a geological transformation processes- a historical military operation terrain metamorphosis to a residential and ski resort-retaining the memory and initiating a regeneration of a new sources of income to the village (completion in 2018); the table series for Moroso titled: Mashrabeya (2015); and most recently Fahmy is among 21 entrepreneurs from around the world, invited by the UNEP to ‘the Mask Architects Project’, Launched at Habitat III, in Quito, Ecuador (2016), and the Climate Change Conference in Marrakech COP22 (2016). Born and raised in Cairo, Fahmy studied architecture at the University of Cairo and later obtained a post-professional degree at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (LOEB 2015) with her research on rapid urbanization and Mapping. She is a two-time recipient of Harvard University’s post- doc fellowships for her prescient work exploring the relationships between urbanism, politics, and human rights: from the Berkman Klein Center at the Law School (2016), and the W.E.B Du Bois research Institute at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (2016). Fahmy taught at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, in New York (2014). She has acted as a speaker and visiting critic at venues such as Harvard University, MIT, Yale University, Columbia University GSAPP, Cooper Union, City College of New York, the Architectural Association AA in London, the Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA, Aga Khan Award for Architecture AKAA, and the American Chamber of Commerce AMCHAM. She serves as a nominator and a reviewer for both awards: the Aga Khan Award for Architecture AKAA and the Jameel Prize for contemporary art and design established by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. Fahmy also served as a member of the board for the International Community of the Red Cross ICRS, Egypt (2012). Fahmy is fluent in French, English and Arabic, and she splits her time between New York, Paris, and Cairo

Selected Experience 2016 Selected among 21 entrepreneurs from 12 countries by the UNEP United Nations Environment Program to be a member of the “Masked Architects Project” to be launched at Habitat III, International event dedicated to housing and sustainable urban development, in Quito, Ecuador, 2016. As well as the climate Change conference in Marrakech (COP22) 2016. This project is part of UNEP and Art of change 21. This international design event is an opportunity to identify, nurture and promote projects that offer tangible evidence of how design can improve lives, within the ecological context. This is not the first time Fahmy has contributed to draw awareness on environmental challenges, in 2007 she was the winner of a furniture competition launched to Katrina aftermath using recycling materials, published in Interior Design Magazine in New York 70th issue, 2007; and most recently her series of Tables for Moroso titled Mashrabeya is another exporation in the recycling materials especially wood (2015). 2015 Nominator for the Jameel Prize 2016, an international award for contemporary art and design. The Prize, worth £25,000, was established by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London 2014 Fahmy’s Advanced Design Studio at Columbia University, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation GSAPP, focused on exploring ‘sites of contestations’ in two cities: Istanbul and Cairo, specifically focusing on "micro sites" and their "macro networks" to introduce architectural interventions at multiple scales. The main objective of the studio is to invent spatial strategies that challenge and re-imagine the power struggles that are currently being played out in both cities, while identifying echoes between these two cities and generate strategies that will be tested at varying scales.

2013 Technical project reviewer for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 12th Cycle 2013 Visiting and reviewing the shortlisted projects on site, and advising the master Jury on the final decision and the Proposed apportionment of credit and prize funds, the Award sum of 1,000,000 USD. The outcome of the process was published in: “Architecture is Life” Aga Khan Award for Architecture book, edited by Mohsen Mostafavi, published by Lars Muller Publishers, Germany.

05-- Shahira Fahmy Architects The overarching aim of SFA projects is to bridge critical gaps in infrastructure and urban development by

creating coherent networks and global exchanges that work for people. The scope of SFA is not limited to urban, and architecture yet it experiment with all others mediums of interventions product design among other things, and explores all social and cultural possibilities that contribute to urbanism. Selected completed projects: the Delfina foundation, London 2014; the Ahmed Bahaa El Din Culutre Center, Assyuit, Egypt 2013; the Sodic Allegria compound, Cairo, Egypt 2014-2018; the Westown city for Sodic and Solidere, Cairo, Egypt (2011); the American University in Cairo: the Malak Gabr Theater, the Moataz El Alfi Hall, the faculty offices and facilities, 2005-2008; the Designopolis: Egypt’s first Design center, 2014; and the E2 Industrial park, in west of Cairo, for Samcrete developments (2011); among others. Selected work in progress: the Wooster Group, the Performing Garage in Soho, New York 2015; the Andermatt planning and architecture phase three master plan, Swiss Alps, Switzerland, in progress (2011-2018).

projects, Fahmy led the design and development team, coordinating a diverse global network of stakeholders and experts collaborators (involving -including Perkins + Will, among others), on numerous projects in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Among these projects were the Dubai Airport, the New Cairo International airport, the Yemen airport, Angola projects, and the Makkah expansion plan, among others.
