Colourful blinds are great for kids’ bedrooms – they can help a space look clean and uncluttered, and make it easy to control the amount of light that enters a room.

However, if you do opt for blinds, it’s important to take safety precautions. Blinds with low-hanging cords or chains can pose a strangulation hazard, especially when younger children are around.

So how do you keep blinds safe? The easiest and most effective option is to opt for cordless blinds. These do away with cords and chains altogether, so you can confidently use them in kids’ bedrooms without putting your little ones in any danger.

You can buy special Twist Safe cordless blinds exclusively from Dunelm. These feature a fiddle-free wand mechanism that’s easy to use and much safer than traditional cords.

Four tips for kids’ blind safety

If you can’t swap your traditional blinds for cordless blinds, there are some extra precautions you can take to make them as safe as possible:

1. Keep cords and chains out of reach using a tensioner or cleat fitted to your wall. At the very least, tie them up.

2. Move your child’s cot or bed away from the window, so they’re less likely to play with a loose cord.

3. Don’t put furniture next to a window, as your child may climb it and gain access to a loose cord.

4. Fit a chain break connector to the blind chain. These snap apart if too much pressure is applied, and are easy to reattach.

All our blinds come with a child safety device for your peace of mind.

Young children need lots of rest, because their minds and bodies are still developing. But when bedtime comes and the sun’s still shining, it can be difficult for kids to settle down.

Blackout curtains and blinds can be a great help. These are specially designed to block out as much light as possible. By limiting the light that enters the room, you can ensure the last few hours of daylight won’t disrupt your child’s sleep routine.

You can buy blackouts in lots of different styles. Dunelm has an extensive range featuring kid-friendly colours and designs, which look cool and lively in the day, but help create a soothing and slumberous space at night.

Getting to Sleep

More benefits of blackout blinds and curtains

They help regulate temperature

Is your child finding it difficult to sleep because they’re too hot or too cold? Blackouts help to keep rooms cool on hot days – and warmer during cold snaps.

They help control noise

More and more of us are living in urban areas, where things that go ‘bump’ in the night are joined by things that go ‘beep’, things that shout, and all sorts of other city sounds. Blackouts are made of tightly woven, thick fabric that helps soften these urban noises and encourages better sleep.

Not just for kids’ bedrooms

Blackouts are naturally suited for children’s bedrooms, but they’re also really good in other rooms where excessive light or noise pollution is a problem – a living room that faces a busy street, for example.

Better sleep quality

Getting more sleep is undoubtedly a good thing, but the quality of the sleep we get is just as important. Reducing excess light and noise, and controlling temperature, means it’s more likely that your kids will get the deep, regenerative sleep they need.

DIY blackout curtains

Want the benefits of blackout curtains without replacing your existing drapes? Blackout curtain linings can turn just about any pair of curtains into light-blocking blackout drapes.

Dunelm sells easy-to-use blackout curtain lining kits, and can also incorporate blackout lining into any pair of made-to-measure curtains.

4. Growing up

As your kids grow into teenagers, it’s likely their tastes will change as rapidly as their hairstyle. If they’ve suddenly started finding bright colours and fun characters a little embarrassing, you can quickly change the feel of a room by opting for a set of monochrome printed blinds. These look understated and ‘grown up’, but with a subtle sense of fun that’s perfect for developing tastes. Pictured: Natural Maps Blackout Cordless Roller Blind, New York Blackout Cordless Roller Blind

5. Arrrrr!

Decked out in delicate blue, these curtains bring the spirit of the high seas to your little boy’s bedroom. On their own, they have a colourful, exotic flavour that will instantly revitalise a drab colour scheme. Put them together with the Kids’ Jolly Pirates Collection Bed Sheets, and things get really pirate-y, with images of sunken treasure, creatures of the deep and friendly captains setting sail.  Pictured: Kids’ Jolly Pirates Blackout Pencil Pleat Curtains

6. Beep Beep!

If your kid can’t get enough of cars, they’ll adore this vrooming brilliant bedroom furnishing collection. There are car-shaped cushions, a variety of vehicular prints and many more exciting accessories for the Formula 1 drivers of the future. The curtains work well without the accessories too, as they feature strong colour blocks that can add a splash of excitement to otherwise understated colour schemes. Pictured: Kids’ Beep Beep Blackout Pencil Pleat Curtains

7. A look that lasts

Simple designs and traditional ‘boy’ colours will go beautifully with the rest of your home’s decorative scheme. These high-quality curtains make it quick and easy to achieve that classic ‘boys’ bedroom’ look. Best of all, they’ll last for years and years, as they won’t be outgrown by your young man – they’re just as suitable for six-month-old babies as they are 16-year-old teens. Pictured: Kids’ Blue Sail Away Blackout Pencil Please Curtains

8. Bugs are cool!

We’re not sure exactly why creepy crawlies seem so fascinating to little boys. However, while us adults might find all this squirming stuff a bit off-putting, it may well signal the start of a burgeoning scientific interest for your little one. Why not encourage their ambitions with some bug-themed bedroom furnishings? These pencil pleat curtains feature lots of colourful bugs, and can be accessorised with other delightfully icky decorations from the Dunelm Kids Bugs Collection. Pictured: Kids Bugs Blackout Pencil Pleat Curtains
