Choose the Perfect Finish for Your Kitchen Remodel
Trying to choose a finish for your
cabinets and other kitchen surfaces
can be one of the most difficult
parts in your kitchen remodel.
Instead of being confused about
what steps you should take,
consider the suggestions below to
help simplify the process for you.
Sure, there isn’t exactly a set of
rules that you should follow when
choosing the right finish or material.
Each and every remodeling project
is going to be different from the last. There are some general guidelines that
you can follow to help make the entire process simple.
Begin by Looking at the Counters
Your counters take a lot of time and effort to make sure you choose the right
finish. They are one of the largest items in your kitchen in terms of texture
and color. By setting the tone with the counters, you can easily choose
colors and finishes to accommodate other aspects of your kitchen in no time.
You want to choose a countertop that is easy to clean and durable. Consider
composite or granite materials. If you want to make a bold statement, look
into natural wood, zinc or even stainless steel. Opt for materials that are
reflective, smooth and light. A large, stone slab will minimize any grout lines
and provide you with a smooth surface.
Look at Various Options for Your Cabinets
Depending on what type of kitchen you have, you might need to start your
color selection with the materials of your cabinets. Your cabinets tend to be
in your face the most out of everything else in your kitchen.

Keep your material selection as natural and simple as possible. Marble, wood
and slate tend to be the most common of all choices. Don’t overdo it with a
vast array of color choices. You should choose three to four materials and
stick with it. Opt for cabinets that are light-colored to keep the area bright
and open. Add other materials in small amounts to add texture and depth.
Add in Other Finishes to Complete the Look
The key to your kitchen should be contrast. When you have darker counters,
opt for light-colored backsplashes. If you have a counter that is busy, you
want to have a calmer looking backsplash. Opt for backsplash colors that
add contrast to your cabinets and counters. The flooring is often determined
based upon the other rooms in your home, but you still want to make sure
the look goes together. You don’t want the flooring to clash with your
kitchen.
Lighting, hardware and fixtures should also tie the entire kitchen together.
Don’t overdo the materials and colors in your kitchen. Less is better.
