What are codes & convention?

• Codes: Codes are symbols and signs that together create a

meaning. They are further classified into two categories such

as technical codes (editing) and symbolic codes(emotions).

• Conventions: The way of doing something related to its

content is termed as conventions.

Masthead

As seen above the name of the magazine is usually seen in white color

yet the font is kept simple. The elegant and decent writing style is easy to

read as it stands out with the floral background . It can be observed that in

order to give importance more to the genre (eg: gardening) the masthead

must be kept simple.

In most of the gardening magazines it is observed that the masthead is

divided into two to three words. Country’s name is written within the

masthead which helps create brand loyalty and is easily identified.

Main image

The main image of gardening magazine revolves around the genre mainly consisting of

close-ups of flowers or garden view. The main image of the magazines gives readers an

idea instantly about what it is about. Along with the main image anchoring images are

set on the cover page. Colour scheme of the main image is very vibrant.

The main cover line relates

to the main image of the

magazine on the left.

The cover lines on the other

hand gives a glance about the

magazine content. The cover

lines of the gardening

magazine are also usually

written in white in accordance

to the masthead. The text

written underneath the cover

lines are the sub lines

providing extra information

about the article itself.

Tag line is a part of main cover page which helps to grab consumer attention.

Barcode Puff

Puff

The barcode is usually placed on the bottom side of the magazine. The symbol of barcode consists of data such as price, issue number.

The puff is a colorful shape in which a catchy phrase written on it. Sometimes puff’s may include offers, lottery prizes, special deals that can be availed.
