“New York’s commitment of reducing GHG emissions by 80% by 2050 is the type of action needed to start the course towards a safer, heftier and more prosperous future.”“New York City continues to see its role as a global leader in combatting climate change with mitigation and adaptation efforts,” he said. “And really cities are becoming the frontline of these efforts”- Dan Zarrilli, New York City’s Director of the Mayor's Office of Recovery and Resiliency

Page 14: Designing Climate Action - Taking Action

DESIGNING CLIMATE ACTION | WEEK 3: SEPTEMBER 24, 2015

OUR GOALS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

14

Enviro-socio: Keep warming under 2 degrees c from pre-industrial levels to avoid worst effects of climate change

Economic: Decouple GHG emissions from economic growth & prosperity

Page 15: Designing Climate Action - Taking Action

DESIGNING CLIMATE ACTION | WEEK 3: SEPTEMBER 24, 2015

TAKING ACTION: MITIGATION, ADAPTATION, RESILIENCE

15

WE HAVE THIS CHALLENGE INTO AN OPPORTUNITY FOR POSITIVE GLOBAL CHANGE, VIA:

(Proactive) Adaptation: Adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities (that takes place before effects of climate change are observed).

Mitigation: An anthropogenic intervention to reduce the anthropogenic forcing of the climate system; it includes strategies to reduce greenhouse gas sources and emissions and enhancing greenhouse gas sinks.

SHIFT IN CONVERSATION TO RESILIENCY

16

RESILIENCY: The ability of a social or ecological system to absorb disturbances while retaining the same basic structure and ways of functioning, the capacity for self-organization, and the capacity to adapt to stress and change.

GOALS FOR EVENT

SEED IDEAS. MAKE CONNECTIONS. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. REWARD THE AUDIENCE. HAVE FUN. • What specific tech/design opportunities can you identify

through the designing climate action event?• How can you give something back to the audience to keep

them engaged in taking action?• Who’s already working on an initiative you could partner on

for the class?• What actors most need to be influenced to create change?• How can you use connected/internet technology, visual

communication & empathy to accelerate the speed of change?
