Design Jam Overview!
• We divided into teams• Each team got an application flow• No one got to work on their own product area• Each flow had a guru the team could ask questions • Each team got a UI toolkit to use to gamify their flows• Teams got scored 3 times during the day in an app we created for the
event.• Win points! Unlock badges! Get prizes!
• At the end, each team got 3 minutes to describe what they did• We all voted for the ULTIMATE CHAMPIONS OF THE DAY!

How we got started• In March, 2012, we had an all hands regular meeting to kick off
the topic of gamification—what it is, what it isn’t and what it means in the enterprise space.
• In that presentation, I talked about motivation, game principles, and key ways that gamification could work in the enterprise space.
• Following that, we convinced my VP of Applications User Experience that a worldwide design jam would be a great exercise and would support our goal of innovation.
• Focused on an event that did not require much additional funding. Our motto was “Lower the bar for acceptance."

On the big day….
11
Worked on our own Fusion apps
• We requested app flows from all the product pillar teams.
• Each flow came with a set of possible business goals for the team to consider when applying game mechanics.
• Each team got a user profile or persona of the end user in question.

Got a flow
• Just like Chopped! Our secret ingredients were in envelopes contained in picnic baskets that teams got just as the game started.
• In the baskets, there was an application flow in print outs and on a flash drive.
• The team assignment was to gamify those flows adding any game mechanics they wanted.
• There was a GURU for each flow if they had questions during the day.

13
Got a UI toolkit• We created a UI Toolkit with pre-built game mechanics which
was included on a flash drive. Teams could just add text and they were ready to go!

Key Points
• Each team had to appoint someone to track what game mechanics they used. That person communicate with the Game Admins during scoring!
• The teams had to create a PowerPoint and save it to the flash drive.
• At the end of the day, they had to present everything they did in THREE minutes to the whole group for scoring!

Secret Sauce• To gamify the Design Jam itself, our rapid prototyping team developed
an app to score the event.
• Participants didn’t know their team assignments until they opened an envelope they got at sign in with a button showing the picture of their team mascot.
• Everyone had to run to their team table and sign into their teams within the app to see their team performance.
• The app had badges, points, leaderboards, infoboards. • At key points in the day, the teams were scored on which game
mechanics they employed.• Scores and badges were presented on two huge projection screens.

Take aways• The event got awareness and excitement about the
possibilities of gamification in enterprise applications.• Definitely converted some skeptics in the group.
• Participants did “game the game” whenever they could.• The group got the basics of game mechanics and how they
are really good principles of user experience/usability just packaged differently.
• Participants really understood the necessity of understanding the end user and what their motivations would be.
