REGARDLESS OF AGE AT DIAGNOSIS, women with breast cancer describe their mother-daughter connec-tion as an important part of their cancer coping expe-rience. The significance of this bond is not surprising, given that the mother-daughter relationship is often the longest, most emotionally connected relationship a woman experiences in her lifetime.

THE FISHER MOTHER-DAUGHTER RESEARCH PROJECT explores patterns of communication between mothers and daughters coping with a breast cancer diagnosis. Often, it is a time of profound changes in the relation-ship. It can deepen or erode their bond and affect them long after the end of treatment. In some fami-lies, communication patterns become a critical asset

in fighting the disease. In others, it can become an additional source of stress and grief.

THE FISHER MOTHER-DAUGHTER RESEARCH PROJECT is working to develop a “psychosocial map” to help fam-ily members and the medical community understand, anticipate, and respond effectively to patterns of com-munication in ways that help patients optimize the emotional elements in fighting this disease.

Integrating positive family communication into breast cancer care can enhance a woman’s ability to adjust to her illness and the physical and emotional changes that come along with it.
