Our passion of wines, exotic coffees, fine dining and entertaining was a must when designing the space. The light cabinetry, clean lines and large island with multiple heights create a monochromatic yet extremely efficient and seamless design. Adding extra windows and featuring the wall with a timeless natural stone tile and using natural walnut accentuating and balancing the warmth of a cold climatic atmosphere make the most of this impressive combination. PLAN OVERVIEW before & after

Any designer who does not appreciate or know about good food is not a very good designer. The planning of a meal and it presentation - the texture, the color, the tastes, the hot and cold temperatures - are the same concerns that affect an environment. ~ Robert Kime, Architectural Digest

 SPECIAL FEATURES

The use of warm tone materials such as natural walnut is the key element to the space and by adding it to the niche area, it balances the contrast of the light colors and creates a richness in the space.

Hidden practical elements are added to be very functional yet unobtrusive; ie: garage door to hide all small appliances, a step ladder hidden inside the toe kick, food processor lift ,basket tilt at sink area, pull out coffee station. All features require less bending and heavy lifting.

Under mount LED strip lighting at lunch counter and Niche area, Enhances the area and gives a floating appearance.

Wine service area for easy entertaining.

Over size Island creates plenty of work space, storage, yet with the different work counter heights and materials, the island is multi-functional and not visually obtrusive.

Concealed vent system at cook top, is not only practical but enhances the clean line design concept. Because of the low ceiling a large over head hood would have broken up line of site.

Acknowledgments

To JB & Joey, your patience, confidence and in put will always be appreciated. Without your generous co-operation this project would not have been possible.

Mom and Dad, Thank-you for taking me in and feeding me delicious nutritious food, when this could have been a time of letting myself go, you pushed me in the right direction.

To Andre & Jean, my contractors extraordinaire, without the two of you, the workman ship would have been shabby, my budget exploded and my time frame doubled, thank-you for the many solutions and the your attention to details.

A warm thank you to Keith Ewenson who photographed my work exactly how I conceived the design.

To all my reps, without your products this project would have been just another big box design, thank-you for your support and excellent service.

From Concept to Reality

Like a lot of my clients I was spurred to redesign this dated, yet quaint little country home. I had reached a different point in my life and what I wanted was a contemporary, modern, Parisian inspired dwelling with a touch of ethnicity to balance the imperturbable feeling that modern design can transfer. This home lent itself perfectly to the idea of re-zoning. Creating one big room in which to place the kitchen, switching the living room and dining room, removing the large wasted space and replacing it with a large master on-suite. I could see immediately the structural changes I would make – knocking down walls, reconfiguring rooms – but every time I went back, I changed my mind. The fact is that I was the client and could afford that luxury, but when you work for someone else – time frame and budget is of the essence. I think I went back to the drawing board half a dozen times. The moral of that is to trust your first instincts: they often remain true, although it is difficult to remember that when you are knee deep in construction dust. Interior designers are like shoemakers with his shoes – we never give quite the same care and attention as we do when designing for someone else. I knew what I wanted but the existing foot print did not lend itself to create that loft style I desired, with never ending ceilings and grand open spaces. My challenge was the low ceilings, they where barley eight feet high and the rooms where poorly proportioned, the landscape although lush and generously grounded with century old large maple trees, but unfortunately this made the space dark and gave a haunted feeling. My solution – tear down every possible wall, add extra windows and start from scratch. Keeping the colors neutral, but emphasizing with our beloved art, adding accents to bring the eyes forward and not upward, Getting the proportions just right and creating mounds of storage to conceal all necessities. What really make this design work is the many uses of lighting. Hi-lighting and creating that perfect mood for any event – from grand parties to just lounging in my Pj’s and enjoying a great movie. This whole experience has given me even more insight into the pitfalls people face when designing their own homes. What I have learned is that everybody likes too many different things. There are so many great products and lines out there that it is easy to lose one’s way – people think they can have it all. My job as a designer is to coax my clients – this way and that way – but often when people are left to their own devices, they pile it all in. You can love a million different styles, but the only way to get a look right is to edit down . This home is my ultimate dream, but with discipline and forethought anyone can create there own dreams too.
