Love for films, passion for photography and sheer joy in writing stories for animation is how I would describe my interests.

Working with a dynamic medium like the Internet, my challenge is to constantly innovate.

My strength is seizing every opportunity to learn and grow.

What drives me is enjoying every moment of my life with my family & colleagues.

Starting from scratch

Born to lead

It’s called Focus.I always knew I would be an entrepreneur. The first steps to getting there were organising digital art exhibitions pan-India with artists from all corners of the world. This, when I was all of 18 years.

Then came freelance assignments and in 2002, fresh out of graduation, I started my own company, Web Animation Studio.

It’s been over 7 years now.

digital art gallery to promote computer art. It featured over 100 digital artists from all over the world.

We also organised ‘real world’ art exhibitions at prestigious venues across the country to give a fillip to this medium. My partner in this effort was Preeti Gopalkrishnan, who I subsequently married in 2004.

I started Yoart.com, India’s first online digital art

shows1999

Yoart.com’s first digital art show was in 1999 at the Kala Ghoda Arts festival, Mumbai. We took part in several exhibitions held at the Pavement Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda.

2000

Yoart.com was a co-organiser in the 1st India International Digital Art Festival along with Subhojit Mitra from Calcutta. Dr. Rodney Chang, an American digital artist was invited to talk about the evolving art form. The exhibition was held at the Oxford Book Store Gallery in Calcutta.

2001

In April 2001, Yoart.com organised the 2nd India International Digital Art festival held at the Nehru Centre Circular Art Gallery, Mumbai. It was sponsored by Mumbaimart.com.

2002Yoart.com was invited by the Kala Ghoda Association to curate a show as part of its Artfest 2003. The show was held at the famous Indigo restaurant in Colaba, Mumbai.

The 20 feet artwork was put up at the Pavement Art Gallery.

I had titled the show ‘Mumbai- A parallel world’.

digital art goes interactive

WorldstreetMy concept Worldstreet was chosen to be presented at the Xmedia Lab held in Singapore in October 2007. The concept was to have an experimental website which will allow all the artists from all around the world to work on one street which will keep growing as the user base of artists increases. I had created the above artwork as a sample. The above pictures were taken during my presentation at The Lab.

During my exhibition ‘Mumbai- A Parallel World’, I was approached by Surekha G., the chief architect of The Times of India’s Mumbai office at D.N. Road. Impressed with my style of work she commissioned me to create six different artworks using archived photographs of India’s premier English daily. For over a week, I had access to several priceless photographs defining Indian history. The artworks, each approximately 10-12 feet in width were put up in the 3rd floor office.

Funded by the Kala Ghoda Association, ‘Crow.d: Meeting of Minds’ was the first show I curated, but didn’t participate as an artist. Also it is the largest show I have done so far with almost 200 feet of artwork printed on flex. I brought together 32 artists and 25 animators, including 10 children. We also organised a papier mache workshop with children to create crows, in association with the NGOs, Prerna and Akanksha. We had two kiosks where we were showcasing the animations & another one with a tablet to encourage people to draw their own version of the Crow!

2005-2006Was a consultant to Broadlyne (An IT company) who had won the tender to create Computer Based Training (CBT) Modules for the Indian Army (EME, Baroda). I was involved in forming a team in Baroda and training them to serve the client. We have created 6 CBTs for the EME division. The company in Baroda is still servicing the client.

2007WAS won the pitch for the Ponds website with Indigo Consulting. Almost 100 videos were used in the website. Our unique application would pick up keywords from the user generated content and would play a suitable video.

WAS in actively involved in training the team with a completely new technology and finally delivering the project. The solution was a first-of-its kind in India.

2009WAS helped Indigo Consulting to create a website with a wall painting application for the Asian Paints brand, Royale. The website would allow users to select their own tool and texture and go wild with the paint on the virtual wall.

Animation

Web Animation Studio was involved in a complete turnkey solution for Shemaroo Entertainment. We help them conceptualise and produce a 60-minute Direct-to-DVD concept. WAS was actively involved in almost every sphere of film making for this home video. Other than 2D animation direction and implementation we were also active in auditions, acting classes, script writing, compositing, editing. The product combined live action with animation for the first time in this video segment.

...................................................................................

Rhymetime in Toyland, 2008 Teen Mastikhor, 2009

‘Teen Mastikhor’ is WAS’ first in-house short animation film. The idea of ‘Teen Mastikhor’ began by posting invitations to be part of the project on a well known animation forum. What followed was a formation of a team. A lot of work on the film was done by freelancers working from their homes. This is truly the future of collaborative virtual production.

I see each team member of Web Animation Studio (WAS) not as an employee, but as a partner, as a friend.

The above photograph was taken at a reunion of all ex-team members of WAS in 2008. It is notable that every team member has worked with me for at least three years, and today our association has continued with each person as a freelancer or consultant.
