Everyone uses PCs in 2016. It is just a fact of life.

And even if you don’t use a laptop, desktop or similar, you should know that mobile phones, tablets of all kinds and even game consoles are essentially computers that perform certain particular tasks, but computers nonetheless.

Perhaps you still own one of those Nokia phones that are harder to kill than a cockroach, or perhaps you simply don’t see the point in owning different devices. Well, you probably are using a computer unknowingly. For instance, when you drive, since cars now have computers (yes, very specialized ones, but still computers at the end of the day).

Even if you don’t make use of these specialized computers, chances are that you will be dealing with some sort of machine sooner rather than later: more and more “smart appliances” are popping up year after year, which means that at some point it is a distinct possibility that all of our homes will be hooked up to the internet.

Fortunately, using computers is not really a chore or incredibly difficult, no matter how daunting it might seem at first. If you know a little bit of what you’re doing, using a PC can be a lot of fun.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the activities you can do with a basic knowledge of how to operate a PC and an internet connection:

· Video on demand. Let’s start with the obvious: for a small fee (and sometimes for free, depending on where you live) you can access hours upon hours of content that you can view whenever you want at whatever pace you want. Feel like watching a whole series in one sitting? Go right ahead. Perhaps you’d like to savour it more and plan on watching one episode a week? You can do that too. Depending on the region you live in there can even be more content than you might have time to see.If you don’t feel like watching movies or TV series, there’s always YouTube, where there are literally thousands upon thousands of videos on pretty much just about any subject you can imagine.Everyone has had at least one time when they started watching a video by their favourite artist on YouTube and then found themselves looking at an explanation of supermassive black holes 5 hours later.· Video games. Another rather obvious choice. Whether a fully immersive experience that requires a beefy PC to run or a flash based Facebook game that you could play on a radar screen due to its simplicity, PC games offer hours of entertainment. Both casual and core gamers will find plenty to like about the PC in terms of game playing, with the PC being the platform to go to for stunning visuals, fast load times and the best online capabilities.· Music, podcasts. As with video on demand, there are services that will provide you with thousands of hours of music right at your fingertips. Spotify even does it for free (with ads that are not as obtrusive as they could be) or for a small fee. If you are performing repetitive labour or some sort of task that you can do on autopilot, why not look for a podcast to listen to in order to make the hours go by faster?

Most podcasts are offered free of charge, and can cover an incredibly vast variety of subjects, from the most mainstream to the nichest hobby you can imagine.· Shopping. Yes, consumerism is a bad thing, but it is also necessary to get yourself something nice every once in awhile. Not to mention the times when you actually do need something in order to work or finish a project of any kind. With internet shopping, your limit is pretty much your imagination. If you need spare parts for electronics, tiki torches, clothes, video games and accessories, health supplies, computer parts or anything in between those, you can probably find it online.· StumbleUpon (or similar). StumbleUpon is a free web service that basically allows you to set a number of interests from a rather big list (you can choose as many as you like). You then proceed to click on a button and the site will take you to a random page on the internet that is related in some way with the interests you listed previously. Sure, there are badly categorized pages here and there and depending on your interests you might not want to use it at work, but overall the experience is a lot of fun. Remember that whole bit about losing 5 hours in YouTube limbo? The same will happen with SU, guaranteed.
