Boring or Drilling tools

are specially designed to make

hole in wood or metal

Page 4: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

The different types of drilling tools adopted to meet special working

conditions such as:1. Punching 4. External

Boring

2. Boring 5. Counter

Sinking

3. Drilling 6. Enlarging

AUGER

diameter ranging from 1/2” to 2 inches

an Auger that is provided with a shank is called “bits”.

Page 14: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Example of Straight Core Bit

Page 15: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• is a coarse pitch for quick boring

recommended for hard or gummy wood,

end-grain boring, mortising doors, etc.

Single Thread Bit

Page 16: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Single Thread Bit & Double Thread Bit

Page 17: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• coarse

Page 18: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• was proven unsurpassed for

accurate working on seasoned lumber not

extremely hard or gummy wood

preferred for cabinet making.

Double Thread Bit

Page 19: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• a bit with double thread can be used practically for all types of work but

bore more slowly than the coarse single

thread bit.

Page 20: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry
Page 21: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Single Cutter

Page 22: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• with an extension lip and coarse screw is recommended for a general all around boring and rapid clean cutting and

easy boring operation.

Page 23: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• it is used for difficult boring or wet green, and very hard knotty wood and boring or

wood parallel with the grain.

Page 24: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

d. Double Cutter

Page 25: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• with extension lip and fine screw big bores and clear the hole easily. It

is recommended for furniture and cabinet

making or wherever the particular smooth hole is

essential.

Page 26: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Screw or Lip

Page 27: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• is sometimes called barefoot.

• it is preferred for deep boring in wet pitchy wood or when straight boring is required. In the absence of

screw bit. It has little tendency to drift down the

grain wood.

Page 28: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Hollow Auger

• is intended for external boring or

turningww vid\Use of a spoke pointer and hollow auger.mp4

Page 29: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Spoke Pointers

• cuts a conical hole. It is similar with the auger

only that the cutter is lengthwise

Page 30: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Counter Sunk

• is used to enlarge a conical hole at the

surface of the wood.

Page 31: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Counter Sunk

Page 32: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Reamer

• is chiefly a machinist tool used in enlarging

manholes.

Page 33: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Reamer

Page 34: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• Likewise, it is also used in carpentry work for

enlarging holes on wood when bored too small for

the screw. Reamer provided w/ a shank

instead of a handle. Thus, brace hand is

indispensable partner of reamer.

Page 35: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Twist Drill

• was designed for drilling small holes.

ww vid\North Brothers, -Yankee- 1545 Hand Drill.mp4ww vid\Wood Hand Drill.mp4

Page 36: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• Twist drills are preferably used in cases where the gimlets or the auger may

cause splitting of the wood grain. This tool has less

tendency of splitting the wood grain because it was not provided with a cutting

lip.

Page 37: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Gimlets

• in using the gimlet, the handle is grasped in the right hand and pressed

into the wood by the palm.ww vid\Chips 'n Tips #5 Gimmie a Gimlet.mp4

ww vid\Boring into End Grain with a T-handle Auger- The Beginning of a Shrink Pot.mp4

Page 38: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• It is driven into the wood by a series of

half turns being released and re-

grasped at each half turn.

Page 39: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Single and Double Twist Auger Bits.

• In boring operations, the screw on the head of the bit draws the tool in

the wood.

Page 40: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• Therefore, making a heavy pressure in drilling is not necessary. The nibs makes an incision in the

wood below the cut advances by the cutters

w/c take the wood shavings into the twist lifting them

out of the hole.

Page 41: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Single Twist Auger Bit

• is primarily intended intended

for boring deep holes.

Page 42: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• the cuttings are thrown into the center of the hold and delivered more easily out as compared w/ the double twist auger w/c

crowds the cutting to the walls of the hole where they become jammed

betweeen the tool and the hole.

Page 43: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Ring Auger Bit

• was designed for heavy work

principally on hardwoods.

Page 44: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• as a worm and twist type boring tool it is

suitable for large deep boring

operations similar in designed as the nut

auger and the boring machine auger.

Page 45: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Straight Core Bit

• is also suitable boring tools for

hard wood.

Page 46: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Expansive Auger Bit

• is also suitable boring tools for

hard wood.

Page 47: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Forstner Auger Bit

• is guided by TS circular rim instead

of its center.ww vid\Step Drilling with Forstner Bits- Quick Tip.mp4

Page 48: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• It can bore any arc of a circle and vould be guided

in any directions regardless of the grain or knots leaving a smooth surface. It is used for

delicate pattern such as core boring, veener,

screen, scalloping, fancy scroll, twist column, etc

Page 49: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

Boring Speed

• the pitch of the boring tool screw determines

the speed of the bit.

Page 50: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• It is not practical to make a different pitch for every kind of boring but

certain standards has been adopted for general work. The thread is made of fine,

coarse or very coarse according to speed of

boring permitted by the nature of the wood to be

bored.

Page 51: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• The term coarse and fine as applied to screws are

relative and maybe applied to either single thread or

double thread. The bit having a given number of double threads per inch

will bore just as fast as a bit w/ half that number of single thread of the same

pitch.

Page 52: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• If the cutters have less pitch than the

threads, they will act as a stop gauge not permittingthe bit to

bore as fast as it would such obstruction

Page 53: Woodworking, boring and drilling lesson, carpentry

• It should be understood that

Double Thread bit is intendedfor soft wood and the Single thread bit is for hard wood

boring.ww vid\Wood Boring Bits.mp4
