+Billy Lee’s History

He was born in Uitenhage, South Africa and later immigrated to England with his parents. Lee later received his BFA, 1st class honors, from Birmingham College of Art and Design and his MFA at the Royal College of Art, in London.

+Billy Lee’s Awards

After Lee graduated from the RCA, he received the prestigious award of Kennedy Scholar. He attended the Centre for Advanced Visual Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and to this day he is the only artist to receive the award of Kennedy Scholar.

In 1999, He received a UNCG Excellence Award and also the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award from the Southeastern College Art Conference in 2002.

Billy Lee has received many awards and attended many exhibitions for his sculptures.

+Sculptures Billy Lee has created sculptures

for over 20 years and his work is located in many locations worldwide such as the UK, Hungary, China, Japan, Chile and Abu Dhabi.

He worked with many materials like stone, steel, and bronze.

Lee designed a 20 foot diameter polished stainless steel sculpture with Arabic calligraphy. The sculpture represented the culture and environment of Abu Dhabi.

many sculptures and all were very unique and different.

+Billy Lee at work in Greensboro Billy Lee is now a professor at UNCG and has

made many art contributions to North Carolina through the North Carolina Arts Council. He is also a member of art institutions all around the world.

To the right is one of many sculptures that have been displayed in the Weatherspoon Art Museum Garden. The sculpture, Sentinals, was made of black painted steel.

Recently, he has been creating large outdoor sculptures in China but he still exhibits his work in the USA, UK, Europe, and the far East.
