Introduction
Over past few decades, India has witnessed significant economic growth that has resulted in mega
investments in transportation sectors. The professional pract ice in road construction has also
undergone significant changes due to adoption of modern approaches in design and state-of-the-art
construction technology. Different aspects of these advanced engineering applications in design and
construction of pavement is yet to reach to the stakeholders. Besides, several quarries, which have
significant bearing on pavement performances, need to be elucidated. This workshop aimed at discussing
some of these critical issues and providing possible solutions to them. This will also provide a common
platform to the different stakeholders such as clients, contractors, consultants, researchers and
academicians to diffuse knowledge on pavement engineering considering all possible directions.
Therefore, endeavour of this workshop is to provide a knowledge sharing platform to all associated with
t h e design of long-life pavements, use of new technologies to measure the quality of rigid
pavements and also, to open up new avenues for industry institute interactions.
About the Institute
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, an Institute of National Importance
under MHRD, Govt of India, was established as Civil Engineering College Calcutta in 1856 with the idea
of introducing engineering education in the country. This is the second oldest institution for engineering
education in India. The institute has been formerly known as Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur. The
Department of Civil Engineering is thus as old as the institute and has been striving to develop and
maintain a glorious tradition of producing quality Civil Engineers for the country.
The institute is located in Howrah, the twin-city of Kolkata, on the west bank of the river Hooghly (the
Ganges). It has a picturesque green campus and is adjacent to the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian
Botanic Garden. The campus is about 5 km from the Howrah railway station and 26 km from Netaji
Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata.
Workshop focus
The workshop will focus on the recent advancements in the design and maintenance of rigid pavements.
The presentations will also include research updates in this emerging field and sharing of experiences
with respect to implementation of design and construction activities in India and abroad. The renowned
experts, who are likely to diffuse their profound knowledge among the field engineers, faculty members
and scholars, include: Prof. B. B. Pandey, IIT Kharagpur, Prof. K.S. Reddy, IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Sudip
Kumar Roy, IIEST, Shibpur, Prof. G.D. Ransinchung R.N., IIT Roorkee, Engr. Rajib Chattaraj,
Superintending Engineer, National Highway Circle, PW(Roads)D West Bengal, Smt. Swati Moitra,
Scientist, IIT Kharagpur and Engr. Bikram Das, Retd. Chief Engineer, WBSRDA. In the penultimate
session, a panel discussion will be held which will be graced by renowned field engineers of West
Bengal.
