VerilyallpraiseisforAllah,wepraiseHimandseekHisaidandaskforHisforgiveness,andweseekrefugewithAllahfromtheevilsofourselvesandourevilactions.WhomeverAllahguidesthereisnonewhocanmisguidehim,andwhomeverAllahmisguidesthereisnonewhocanguidehim,andIbearwitnessthatnonehastherighttobeworshippedexceptAllahAlone,havingnopartner,andIbearwitnessthatMuhammadisHisslaveandHisMessenger.

OptionalFasts

Withoptionalfasts,iftheintentionismadeatanytimeofthedaythenthecorrectopinionisthatapersonreceivestherewardoffastingthewholeday.4

"قالت قال يل رسول الله صىل الله عليه وسلم ذات يوم -رىض الله عنها -عن عائشة أم المؤمنني،

ء" ء. .يا عائشة هل عندكم ىش قالت .فإين صائم" "قال قالت فقلت يا رسول الله ما عندنا ىش فلام رجع رسول -قالت -أو جاءنا زور -ىل الله عليه وسلم فأهديت لنا هدية فخرج رسول الله ص

وقد خبأت لك -أو جاءنا زور -الله صىل الله عليه وسلم قلت يا رسول الله أهديت لنا هدية .قد كنت أصبحت صامئا" "فجئت به فأكل ثم قال ."هاتيه "قال .قلت حيس .هو" ما "قال شيئا.

Allah,thereisnothingwithus.Thereuponhesaid:Iamobservingfast.Shesaid:TheMessengerofAllah(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wentout,andtherewasapresent,forusand(atthesametime)somevisitorsdroppedin.WhentheMessengerofAllah(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)cameback,Isaidtohim:MessengerofAllah,apresentwasgiventous,(andinthemeanwhile)therecametous

visitors(amajorPortionofithasbeenspentonthem),butIhavesavedsomethingforyou.Hesaid:Whatisit?Isaid:Itishais(acompoundofdatesandclarifiedbutter).Hesaid:Bringthat.SoIbroughtittohimandheateitandthensaid:Iwokeupinthemorningobservingfast.5

RefrainingfromThoseThingsThatBreakaPerson’sFast

Itisobligatorytorefrainfromallthingsthatnullifythefastfromdawn/thestartofFajruntilsunset,suchas:

1) Eatingfoodordrinking.Takingnutritionalinjectionshasthesamerulingaseatinganddrinking.

إذا نيس فأكل ورشب فليتم "عن أيب هريرة ـ رىض الله عنه ـ عن النبي صىل الله عليه وسلم قال ا أطعمه الله ."وسقاه صومه، فإمن

heshouldcompletehisfast,forwhathehaseatenordrunk,hasbeengiventohimbyAllah."6

2) Havingsexualrelations:

الله عنه ـ قال بينام نحن جلوس عند النبي صىل الله عليه وسلم إذ جاءه أن أبا هريرة ـ رىضفقال رسول الله .قال وقعت عىل امرأيت وأنا صائم ."ما لك "قال .رجل، فقال يا رسول الله هلكت

فهل تستطيع أن تصوم شهرين "قال .قال ال .هل تجد رقبة تعتقها" "وسلم صىل الله عليه له لقال فمكث النبي صىل ا .قال ال ."فهل تجد إطعام ستني مسكينا "فقال .قال ال ."متتابعني

ـ عليه وسلم، فبينا نحن عىل ذلك أيت النبي صىل الله عليه وسلم بعرق فيها متر ـ والعرق المكتل ائل "قال ق به "قال .فقال أنا ."أين الس قر مني يا رسول الله فقال الرجل أعىل أف ."خذها فتصد

thanI?ByAllah;thereisnofamilybetweenits(i.e.Medina's)twomountainswhoarepoorerthanI."TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)smiledtillhispremolarteethbecamevisibleandthen

said,'Feedyourfamilywithit."7

Accordingtothegeneralagreementofthescholars,ifapersoneatsordrinksdeliberatelyandknowinglythentheirfastisbroken,eveniftheyhaveconsumedasmallamount.8

ActionsWhichDoNotBreaktheFast

Thefollowingactionsdonotbreakone’sfast:

v Tastingfoodwithoutswallowingit.

v Usinganoxygenmaskforbreathing.v UsingKohl(antimony)andeyeandeardrops.However,itisnotallowedtousenose

drops(forfearitmayenterintothethroat)

v Vomitingintentionallyorunintentionallydoesnotbreakthefastaccordingtothemostcorrectopinion.

v Hijamah(cupping),butitisbesttodelayHijamahuntilthenightsothatthebodydoes

notbecomeweak.

Iftar(BreakingtheFast)

MakingDuaisprescribedatthemomentofbreakingthefastwhetherornotitisdonefacingtheQiblahorbyraisingthehands.15

NoauthenticsupplicationhasbeenreportedfromtheProphetatthetimeofIftar,soonecan

saysayanysupplication.16

Itisprescribedtobreakthefastbyeatingbeforedrinkingandchoosingtheripedateoverthedrydate,butiftheseitemsareunavailable,watershouldbedrunkinsips.

ThecontinualfastwheretheIftarisdelayeduntiljustbeforethebeginningoffajrorthe

continuationofafastintothesecondorthirddayisprohibitedaccordingtoanagreementofthescholars.

Providingfoodforthefastingpersonwithwhichtobreakhisfastisrecommendedaccordingtoaconsensus(ofthescholars),althoughthehadithinregardstoitsvirtueisnotauthentic.17

HasteningtheIftar

ItisanemphasisedSunnahtohastentheIftar.HasteningtheIftarmeans;tobreakthefast

afterbeingsurethatthesunhassetandnotwhilstindoubtofthesettingofthesun.

NarratedbySahlbinSa`d:Allah'sMessenger(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said,"Thepeoplewillremainontheright

pathaslongastheyhastenthebreakingofthefast."18

Ifsomeonehastenedandbrokehisfastandrealisedthereafter,thattheyhadeatenbeforesunsetduetoitbeingovercast,thentheirfastisstillvalidaccordingtothemostcorrect

Suhoor(Pre-DawnMeal)

ItisaSunnahtodelaytheSuhoortothelastportionofthenightandinitisblessing,meaningreceivingassistanceinperforminggooddeedsforitgivesenergytotheperson,thereforeifaservantofAllahtakesSuhoorthenthatwillassisthiminrecitingtheQuran,beingobedient,

connectingthetiesofkinshipandothergooddeeds.
