The parish of Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe and Sutton on Seaoffers fun and relaxation for the whole family, with theemphasis on value for money.

This gives the area the uniqueness of having a mix ofscenery and amenities’ from the bustle of Mablethorpe HighStreet and central promenade with its shops andamusements, to the quiet and gentle walks aroundTrusthorpe and the peace and tranquillity of Sutton on Seaand Sandilands. The area boasts agriculture and sweepingcountryside views on one side and the beautiful sandy beach onthe other, offering something for everyone and continuing to be afirm favourite with children and adults alike. We hope both residentsand visitors enjoy the opportunities this unique parish gives us.

Town Council’s Welcome

MABLETHORPE SITUATED on the “drier side the country”,Mablethorpe flourished as a traditional seasideresort following the ‘Louth and East Coast’railway line which opened in 1877; this broughtan influx of visitors to the resort from the EastMidlands and North West.

Pre-dating this and noted in the Doomsday book,the production of salt appeared to be the primeindustry for the northern area of Mablethorpethrough to Saltfleet and Grainthorpe.

Throughout the centuries the area has had its fair share of problems, including the loss ofaround a third of the population to the Black Death in 1349, having a dramatic effect on thissmall farming community.

Population figures were low – being a mere 40 adults in 1115; rising to 157 in 1603 andagain to an estimated 261 in 1841 – compare that with today!

The Town was granted Market Rights by King Henry III in 1253; the charter gave the lord ofthe manor, David de Monte Alto sole rights to hold a weekly market in the Town.

Recently the Town Council have taken over the management of the market service from theDistrict Council and with over 30 stalls selling a wide variety of products, the weekly Thursdaymarket is well worth a visit. The market promotes the national ‘Real Deal’ charter, givingshopper’s peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that no counterfeit or illegal goods areoffered for sale by any trader.

Despite the closure of the railway in 1970, visitors and tourists continue to flock to thispopular seaside resort, boosting the population for Mablethorpe from its static of around7900 (2011 census) to around 18000 during the peak holiday season. Mablethorpecontinues to maintain its superb reputation as a family resort, with the seafront having beendesigned with children in mind with the award winning beach, traditional donkey rides andpopular funfair. For the grown ups there are colourful gardens to visit in nearby Queens Park,bowling greens, boating lake, and of course the abundance of pubs, clubs and restaurants tocater for refreshments.

For the sporting visitors there are a number ofclubs in the area from tennis to football andbadminton with the Sports Centre catering for avariety of sports. Horse riding stables and fishinglakes are available nearby.

Moving away from the beach into the centre oftown, shoppers and bargain hunters can browsenumerous shops in the town with plenty ofsouvenirs available for that special memory. TheSeal Sanctuary at the North End of Mablethorpe

gives an insight into the life of the mammals of the sea with birds and many other animalsincluding the recent addition of a meerkat enclosure.

Evening and night time entertainment abound, from the local cinema to the bustling nightclubs and entertainment venues to the many pubs in town offering live music and bands. Julysees the annual “illuminations switch on” event, with traditional seaside entertainmentconcluding with an impressive fireworks display.

During the off-peak weekends of the autumn and winter months, the exhilarating sport ofmotorcycle sand racing takes place along with the annual Christmas market andilluminations.

All in all, there is something for everyone summer and winter, resident and visitor makingMablethorpe the place to be.

SUTTON ON SEAPreviously known as Sutton in the Marsh, Sutton on Sea offers a more tranquil environmentto the bustling atmosphere of Mablethorpe.

With an estimated population of 100 in 1287, the area was predominantly farming andfishing. Before the branch line connected Sutton to the main railway, it had its own steamtram running to Alford, with its terminus being the Bacchus Hotel. Talk of a harbour at thattime brought much excitement and the Sea View Freehold Land Society was formed todevelop the area, resulting in the Park Road and Grove Road development.

Today the area retains its peacefulness,with no amusement arcades or funfair,the friendly and informal welcomeextended to visitors ensures this prettyvillage wins the hearts of visitors, yearafter year.

This gives the town’s residents (2011census – 4700) and visitor’s time tosavour the quiet sandy beaches,discover the individual and traditionalshops and the opportunity to visit thetranquil pleasure gardens. The sportingcontingency is still catered for with the

football pitch, the fitness equipment and the skateboard ramp, as well as the cricket andbowling pitches and paddling pool. Nearby Sandilands Golf Club welcomes visitors to play andenjoy the club house facilities, and nature lovers can visit the Town Council’s Acre GapConservation Area or walk along Branch Line Walk to Hannah.

The village is a hub of activity and boasts an excellent Carnival, full of colour, sound laughterand fun in July each year. In December the traditional Christmas market and carol servicemeans Sutton on Sea is a place in its own right.

TRUSTHORPENestling between Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea isTrusthorpe ‘the traditional’ village element of the parish.Crop fields and grazing livestock keep the agriculturalspirit alive whilst maintaining the distinctiveness ofthe area with a resident population of 2000 (2011census).

There are an abundance of footpaths to walkalong, as well as the beach and sea defence walkgives Trusthorpe a gentler feel. Dwellings nestleamongst caravan sites on one side and fields andcountryside on the other; the area has its owncharacter and history. The population was around286 in 1842, with residents employed in agricultureand fishing giving an interesting history, with smugglingand ship-wrecks amongst its ghosts! Time was when, atvery low tide, an old forest could be seen off Trusthorpe beach,a relic of global warming of the time when the sea claimed the land!

MABLETHORPE Station was established in1883 to replace an outdated station atTheddlethorpe, located three miles to thenorth, there were difficulties in obtaining bothmen and horses to launch the lifeboat fromthis location. Built on the beach atMablethorpe North End, the station waspublicly inaugurated on the 4th June 1883,when a crowd of some 10,000 people turnedup for the ceremony.

Due to location problems, a new station, nowknown as “The Boatshed”, on Victoria Roadwas built in 1900. During The Great War thisstation was temporarily closed as many men were fighting for King & Country. The stationnever recovered and the last lifeboat, the ‘John Rowson Linguard’ was withdrawn in 1920.

The town’s first lifeboat, ‘the Heywood’ (Lifeboat number 275) was built in 1882 andcommissioned in 1883. During her years of service it launched on 24 occasions and saved13 lives. It took 12 horses to launch the lifeboat and the 10 man crew would be able toachieve approximately 3½ horse power in heavy seas. In 1965 the lifeboat station was re-established as an inshore station when a D class lifeboat went on service. Today, the newstation, built in 2001, houses an Atlantic 75 and the D class inshore lifeboats. ACRE Gap lies between Church Lane and Sea Lane,Sandilands and is the area where the sea undermined thedefences in 1953. In 2010, a joint project between LindseyMarsh Drainage Board and Mablethorpe and Sutton TownCouncil, completed the inline storage areas on site to improvethe flood defence, increasing standards of protection.

A working group of the Town Council and local enthusiastsand members of the local WI, work to manage and constantlyimprove the area creating this larger wetland conservation sitehelping to promote the conservation of wildlife. The area hasmany varieties of wild flowers, including cowslips and beeorchids! A number of trees now established include holly, hazel, blackthorn, alder and horsechestnut and through careful management and structured planting, the area continues tobloom. This hidden asset can be found by walking south along the promenade from ChurchLane pullover, stunning views of the site can be seen from this advantage point and you areinvited to walk amongst the grass and wildflower meadows. A number of footpaths cross theAcre Gap site, making it a favourite dog walking place and giving walkers to opportunity todiscover new plants and identify the wildlife.

ST MARY (MABLETHORPE)THE present church is thought to datefrom c1300 as the original was thought tohave been washed away in a great stormsurge of 1287. Legend is that the bells willbe heard to ring when another flood isimminent. During bell ringing practice inthe 1950’s, the floor began to collapse,and following subsequent excavations aslabbed grave was discovered, thought tobe that of George de Mablethorpe.

The bell tower contains 6 bells; in earliertimes the bells were tolled to mark thepassing of a parishioner, twelve times for aman, nine times for a woman and three times for a child. In 1978, due to subsidence, theoriginal mediaeval arches were replaced; however some of the original stone bases remain.In the Sanctuary is a tomb of an unknown ‘Earl Fitzwilliam’, legend has that he fought a duelin the 14th century, in which both parties died. He was buried here and his metal helmet canstill be viewed today. Likewise there is a monument in the church at Maltby to an Earl whichfurther supports the legend. The church seats around 200 people and Sunday Service is heldat 11.00am and Thursdays at 9.30am.

ST PETERS (TRUSTHORPE) The original church at Trusthorpe is said to have been situated a quarter of a mile east ofwhere it stands now, and was destroyed by the encroaching sea. The present church consistsof the Nave, the Chancel which was constructed in 1931 and the Tower. This is constructedof red brick with a mediaeval font inside. In the wall of the porch is an inverted stone, carvedwith a shield, cross and gothic inscription. This impressive church dates back to 1606 withthe church being re-built in 1842. Sunday Service starts at 8.30am and Tuesdays Servicestarts at 9.30am.

ST CLEMENT (SUTTON-ON-SEA)Many years ago, a large part of the parish, including the church, was out at sea, St Clementswas re-built in 1819 and again in 1860 when the chancel was enlarged and the transeptadded to improve the seating capacity.

Although the church is now a fairly modern structure, it is noted for its “leaning tower”containing four bells, with the oldest dating from the 15th century. The church seats 200people with the regular Sunday Service is held at 9.45am and a mid week service held onWednesdays 9.30am.

MABLETHORPE boasts an award winningbeach, with dune areas planted withnative flora and conservation work torecycle the towns Christmas trees being avital part of improvements to the dunessea defences. Throughout the town eachyear there are teams of workers,volunteers and staff, busy planting,trimming, watering and growing in order toimprove the chances in the regional andnational In Bloom competitions. WinningSilver awards in the East Midlandscategory in 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012,with individual areas winning Silver Gilt,the team worked even harder to become winners of the Coastal Town Category in 2010, andattained a Silver in the National In Bloom competition. However, the aim is not to win trophiesand awards, it is about community engagement, encouraging people to take pride in theirtown, their area and assisting the community to come together to achieve great things. Thecore Mablethorpe ‘In Bloom’ group pull in many volunteers, as receive assistance from bothTown and District Councils ensuring Mablethorpe looks its best throughout the whole seasonand beyond.

IN November 2010, Meridale Youth & Community Centre in Sutton on Sea celebrated 45years of service to the local community.

Established in 1965 as a Youth Club by a group of local teenagers, it has gone on to becomea very important organisation in the area, with recognition from a wide ranging groups,societies and Town, District and County Councils.

In 2004 the Centre was honoured with the Queens Award for Voluntary service to thecommunity, being the only recipient in the county and one of only 104 in the whole of theUK.

As in the early days, young people, with the advice and support of a Management Committee,look after the day-to-day management of the centre. The Centre Manager, John Monk MBE,has been directly responsible for its growth and continuance over the years.

Meridale is ideally placed in the centre of Sutton on Sea and offers first class facilities, withdisabled access throughout; different meeting rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, internetaccess and more, to accommodate just about every conceivable need.

The Centre also produces extremely successfulexhibitions and concerts and the hugely popular‘Let’s Celebrate Sutton’ extravaganzas.

Other achievements include the provision anddistribution of its own community newsletter,covering Huttoft, Sandilands, Sutton on Seaand Trusthorpe with plans to extend intoMablethorpe.

With help from the Town Council, young peoplewere responsible for designing and providing thewrought iron railings around the War Memorial,erected in time for the Remembrance Service inNovember 2010.

Meridale has recently undertaken an ambitious project to develop a derelict piece of land atthe rear of the centre to provide a safe play area and community garden for the benefit ofthe whole community.

Meridale receives overwhelming local support and continues to play a vital role in the serviceof the whole community.

Library & Stanley Avenue DevelopmentSituated off the High Street, the Stanley Avenue development consists of a modern bright andvibrant library, housing a modern computer suite as well as books, videos and DVDs. Within thesame building is East Lindsey District Council’s Customer Service centre for Mablethorpe andSutton, Neighbourhood Management and the Town Council offices along with a communitymeeting room. Further along the road is the Sure Start Children’s Centre, providing early learningfor pre-school children.

Moving to the end of Stanley Avenue is the Marisco Medical Centre which, combined with thepractice on Broadway at Sutton on Sea, consists of GP’s, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses,Healthcare Assistants and a large Administration team. Both surgeries are modern, purpose-built clinical buildings with well equipped consulting and treatment rooms, and patients can betreated at either site.

Turning back along Stanley Avenue towards the High Street is the Community Hall and InterAgency building. The Community Hall provides a valuable meeting place for a wide range ofactivities and the Inter Agency Building providing information and meeting rooms for a range ofservices including Citizens Advice Bureau.

Finally, before reaching the supermarket and the end of Stanley Avenue, is Linkage Green &Cafe, a superb bowling green facility with adjacent cafe managed by Linkage Community Trust.The cafe is open to the public and supports people with learning disabilities teaching new skillsand independence development.

SITUATED around the pullover and Meridale Hallarea, Sutton Pleasure Gardens offer play areasand tranquil sitting areas for children and adultsalike. With a safe and pleasant paddling poolwhere children can play under the watchful eyeof parents sitting around the pool, tenniscourts, grassed areas, bowling green, waterfeatures, sitting areas, colonnade, cafe andrefreshments the area provides a safe shelteredhaven for everyone.

Sutton Pleasure Gardens

Situated centrally on Victoria Road, Mablethorpe, and builtin 1900 this building, housed the lifeboat until 1920.Following a period of dereliction, new life prevailed withchange of use by the Boatshed Organisation who turnedthe building into a multi use centre, offering support,information, advice and training to the community, thebuilding also houses the local branch of the LincolnshireCredit Union. All manner of information useful to bothresidents and visitors can be accessed here with theinterior still reflects the building’s former use.

St Marys Park – situated almost in the centre of Mablethorpe, this Conservation Park wasdeveloped following the closure of the landfill site there, and consists of wild grass area, treesand shrubs, walkways and a small pond. It forms part of the cycleway around and throughthe town.

Trusthorpe Triangle – Trusthorpe residents completed this Community Garden Project in2011 that has turned a previously unused piece of land in the centre of Trusthorpe into anattractive garden to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and has created an identity forthe village.

Diana Memorial Garden – a small gardenarea situated off Trusthorpe Road which gives apleasant place to just sit and relax, with amemorial and floral tribute to Diana Princess ofWales and is maintained by NeighbourhoodManagement volunteers.

Railway Walk and Turntable Area – situatedbetween High Street (off Station Road) and theIndustrial Estate. Railway Walk is a pleasantgreen walk following the line of the old railway.Located on the site of the former RailwayTurntable, the area has been turned into a small conservation area, with a monument to theformer use in the form of a carved engine, interspersed with wildlife feeding areas andassociated planting.

Branch Line Walk – Following the line of the oldrailway from Crabtree Lane Sutton to Hannah, theBranch Line walk is an excellent use of the formerrailway line by incorporating a walk with the needto conserve wildlife - plants, birds and insects. Thetrees, grasses and plants provide shelter to avariety of birds, insects and small creatures andgive walkers the chance to wander the footpaths inthe area.

Harris Boulevard Community Garden – Locatedoff Seacroft Road, Mablethorpe, the young people

from the local youth forum (lead by neighbourhood management) have worked extremelyhard on this project, working with the Town Council to secure funding to make this projectsuccessful. This project is a fantastic example of how young people have made a positivedifference in their community and they achieved a Level 4 award in the 2012 In BloomAwards.

Cycleway – From St Marys Park through Stanley Avenue, along High Street (with care) andQueens Park to the pullover and then on through to Huttoft Car Terrace. (Note – care isneeded through the sand areas, and right of way must be given to pedestrians on thepromenade).

THE refurbishment of the Sea View Car Park in 2008 not only improved parking facilities inthe area, but has given visitors the opportunity to have excellent views across the beach andout to sea. Walking from the cafe and shop along the cobbled pathway to the observationplatform visitors can take advantage of the fantastic vantage point, and with the telescopecan even see some of the constant stream of shipping heading to and from the port ofGrimsby. The National Coastwatch Station is also located in this area.

Two sets of steps allow access from the carpark to the blue flag award beach where acresof sandy beaches can be enjoyed. From thesouth end of this car park you can walk alongthe lighted pathway towards the mainMablethorpe pullover. This walkway forks justbefore reaching the crazy golf course to allowyou to walk down through the sand dunes andjoin the promenade at the far end of NorthPromenade, or you can continue onto the landside of the dunes where the crazy golf coursestarts and then on down to the Skatepark.

Skatepark and Exercise Equipment The Skatepark was constructed in early 2008 built by the district council. Currently theSkatepark has a Spine, Fun Box, ¼Pipe, 2 Grind bars and ramps. This well used amenitycontinues to be a hit with regular users and visitors alike with superb tricks and stuntsregularly demonstrated. The two pieces of “gym” equipment were erected following asuccessful grant application through Groundwork Lincs in conjunction with the District andTown Councils in 2010 and are designed to exercise muscles whilst providing enjoyment. TheRodeo Board and the Twin Fly are both popular with young and not so young.
