Reception Year OneTerm 1, 2018 Curriculum Overview

The Australian Curriculum is a framework that guides what we teach. It is an online document and can be found at: www.australiancurriculum.edu.au. As a teacher, I understand that students bring to school a wide range of experiences, abilities, needs and interests. Students natural curiosity about their world provides a platform to plan and review their learning. I believe that students learn through a balance between interactions with others, experimentation, scaffolding, explicit teaching, practice and play in the classroom and beyond. In particular, play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional skills. Play is important for healthy brain development. It is through play that children at an early age engage and interact with the world around them. The following is a description of the curriculum areas covered this term. The theme for the term is “Me and My History”:

Religious Education:God and Revelation: Students explore God’s presence in creation. Students will explore how their senses are important in communicating and in expressing their love for God and others.Being Human: God loves each human person. Prayer and Liturgy: CelebratingStudents explore prayer, including Liturgy, within the Christian Tradition as celebrations of God’s presence in their lives. Students are invited to participate in prayer and Liturgical experiences.

English:LanguageStudents will explore the English language and how it is used differently at home and at school depending on the relationships between people. Students will work on sound-letter matches (phonics). Students will learn to recognise and name upper and lower case letters and know the most common sound that each letter represents.LiteratureStudents will be responding to, examining and creating literature. Students will be encouraged to share their experiences with literature. Students will experience modeled and shared reading of a variety of texts and reading response activities.LiteracyStudents will begin exploring decodable and predictable texts, and learn the three ways to read a book- read the pictures, read the words, retell the story. Students will have a go at creating short texts which report their ideas. Students will be encouraged to draw pictures when representing their ideas. When writing, students will be encouraged to practice letter formation. Speaking and ListeningThroughout the year, children will be given many opportunities to develop their Oral Language skills. Interaction skills children will further develop include turn-taking, recognising the contributions of others, speaking clearly and using appropriate volume and pace. The 5 L’s of listening and the basic skills of listening and speaking will be encouraged. ‘Show and Share’ allows students to practice speaking in front of a familiar audience for different purposes. Sharing helps children to develop their listening and speaking skills as well as further develop their confidence. Children will have the opportunity to talk about an item with the class.Daily FiveThe Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks (read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, writing and word work) that students work on each day while the teacher engages in small group instruction. This framework helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers. The goal is to develop lifelong skills of independent literacy.
