BOTM Name_________________________Science Fiction/Fantasy

For your science fiction book project, you will select one of the following options to complete on or before the due date. Please be sure to consider which option you are going to complete before May 15 so that you have ample time to plan, prepare, complete, and revise your project. Your completed project will be due on or before May 26.

After beginning to read your selection, consider each of the project options below. Different books will lend themselves to different projects. Select a project that you will find both fun to do and easy to complete given the nature of your book.

“ Story Map ” poster Create a poster on paper that is at least 12” x 18” (construction paper). Required elements include the title, your name, neatly drawn illustrations, and neatly written captions. This is similar to a postcard that outlines a state and then illustrates important people, events, and objects in relevant locations. Your poster should be neat and colorful. An alternative to this could be to use the story map design we have used this year to evaluate reading books in the “plot” format. All 6th grade writing requirements apply. Ink or word processing must be used for writing.

Written EssayWrite an informational essay about a topic covered in your book. For example, if you are reading Eragon and are interested in dragons, you might choose to research and write about dragons. This should be a five-paragraph essay with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Your essay should be completed in final draft form. All editing and revision work should be finished before the final draft is written neatly in ink or word-processed. All 6th grade writing requirements apply. An illustration is desirable but not required. Maximum of one page.

3-Dimensional ProjectCreate a 3-dimensional project about your chosen book or topic. There are a few possibilities you may choose from, such as a story element cube or a mobile to hang from the ceiling. Your project could identify what you consider to be the most interesting facts about your topic (minimum of 10) or a timeline of plot (minimum of 5 entries with illustrations). All 6th grade writing requirements apply.

Oral Presentation (Speech) Prepare a presentation to give to the class that would tell about your topic or story. For your presentation, a visual aide would be appropriate provided that it is useful and not merely a prop. Your speech must be well prepared and rehearsed with attention to length, volume, pace, audience eye contact, and content information. Arrangements for presentation time must be made by May 21.

On-Line ProjectLog into your Google Docs account and create a new presentation for your selected book. Create a new PowToon to share with the class. Develop another on-line project using another program or application you enjoy using. Be sure to include the book’s “Theme(s)” in whatever online project you select. All 6th grade writing requirements apply.

Your Own Project DesignPerhaps you have an idea that is different from all of the options listed before. Perhaps you want to create a PowerPoint presentation on your topic. Perhaps you have a different idea entirely. Please present your idea to your homeroom teacher before May 15 for approval. You must present your idea completely to show that you already have a plan for successful completion of your project.
