Calaveras de azúcar Instead of making skulls out of sugar, consider using clay, which is much easier. In a large bowl, put: 1 ½ cups salt 4 cups flour 1 tsp. alum Stir dry ingredients until mixed well. Add up to 1 ½ cups water slowly until clay forms a ball, mixing with your hands. Add more water if crumbly. It should be the consistency of cookie dough or pie crust dough. Divide clay into four balls and shape into skulls as best you can. Each skull should be molded on its own piece of waxed paper. When molding your skull shape, think of molding it into the shape of a light bulb. After the clay has firmed up a bit – but isn’t completely dry - use a dull pencil, toothpick, skewer, paperclip, etc. to engrave the facial features into the skulls. Once your design has been engraved, consider using traditional food decorations; such as cake icing (put it in a Ziploc baggie and barely clip the tip and you can pipe it out like the pros), food coloring, sprinkles, etc. or glitter, paint, glue, paper – anything!! REMEMBER: The dough is delicate and needs to be handled carefully.
